1960 Valiant- Replacing the 170 engine with a newer low time hydraulic lifter 225. Planning to keep existing 3 speed on the floor, 9 1/4" clutch package and bellhousing. I am hoping to replace the 148-tooth flywheel with a 122t flywheel having the larger crankshaft flange register hole and also allowing the use of a newer, lighter gear driven 10 tooth starter. Sadly, the flywheels are hard to find. Brewers stocks a 1968-up 122t S/6 flywheel however I was told the flywheel and bellhousing must match and that his flywheel will not work with my bellhousing but I am not sure why. Bolt patterns on the pressure plates are the same and I am assuming the crankshaft bolt pattern is the same on all S/6's. Told his flywheel measures 12 1/4" dia. while mine is 12 1/2". Is this because of the difference between the direct drive starters vs the gear driven starters and does this make a difference on the bellhousings for the 3 speed transmissions? Any help to clarify these questions and point me in the direction of what I need is greatly appreciated.

Dan Can probably shed some light on this.

Also a Moderator should move this to the transmission section of the forum.

I would guess the starter would be too far away from the flywheel since the new flywheel is a smaller diameter.

It is only 1/8" of inch smaller in radius, I would suspect there is another reason. But I have been wrong many times before.

I was under the impression all S/6 flywheels for cars were the same except for 60-61 (148 tooth) and after 68 the crankshaft register hole was slightly larger. It is hard to make comparisons without having them in front of you. It has been 50 years since I last played with the S/6's, so I need to start the learning curve back up. Thanks to all for any advice.

I would Imagine you can find a good 1968-1987 122 Tooth flywheel with a wanted ad here as well as a 3 speed bell housing.

The 3 speed bell housings show up all the time at swap meets such as carlisle too. Check eBay as well

Is there a difference between the 3- speed bell housings and how do I tell them apart? I thought I was set with the 68-up flywheel from Brewers but he told me it will not work with my 1960 bell housing. The only thing different I can tell is his flywheel (68-up) is 1/4" smaller diameter than my 1960 148 tooth I removed. Hoping to use the newer 122t style starter (10 tooth). Also, will a newer 3- speed bell housing have the same mount points for the "Z" arm hardware?

I think I had a '60 bellhousing once.

I must have scrapped it. I cannot find it now. It was visually different..I never got and detailed measurements or comparisons.

I am not sure if the difference in using your larger ring gear flywheel is in the be housing or in the starter... or both.

If brewers says it won't work then I believe them.
