I have a 1975 Dodge dart with a Slant Six 225. The other day I drove it to work nor problem. Got in it to come home got half way there and it started sputtering and spitting and then just stopped.

I put a new carb on it in March as well as a new coil and Ballast resistor, it was running great, but then this.

Since it stopped I have replaced the Ballast resistor again as well as the dist. cap and rotor.

I have good spark from the coil, and I have checked the spark to the plugs, the plug spark seems to be a bit weak but their is some spark.

I am trying to determine if it could be the Electronic Ignition Box or maybe the distributor.

Any guidence would greatly appreciated.

You have spark, even if it's weak.
Make sure there's fuel at the carburetor.

Yes, it could be the ECU causing your problems. I would also check your coil. When you got the new coil, was it for electronic ignition or standard points? A standard coil will work on electronic, but it will fail in time (usually a short amount of time). Ask me how I know.... Chrysler changed coils after they went to electronic ignition. You may have a spark, but it is probably not strong enough to ignite the mixture.

Hey, Checked the coil it is correct for Electronic ignition I have come to the conclusion that there is just no spark to the plugs, pulled them out and they were soaked with fuel.

I am going to replace the Dist and see if that corrects the fault, Already tried a new ECU no change.

First off, does the rotor on the distributor turn when you crank the engine over? If it does, does it turn smoothly? If it doesn't turn or it turns jerkily, remove the distributor and check the gear on the bottom. If it is broken, replace te gear. Rotate the distributor by hand, does it move smoothy? Now pull on the shaft, It should move a slight amount up and down. Does it? If there is a large movement, replace the distributor. If the distributor checks out, you will need to check the timing chain which requires dismantaling the front of the engine.

Next, disconnect the coil wire from the distributor cap. Ground this wire out on the engine block. When you turn the engine over, you should see a nice white spark. It should be able to jump about a 1/2" gap. Is this occuring? If it cann't or the spark is "reddish" in color you need to replace the ECU.

Reconnect the coil wire to the distributor cap. Now do the gap test with any of the spark plug wires. Do you get a nice white spark from the 1/2" gap? If not then replace the wires and distributor cap and rotor.

on my holly carb, the fitting from the carb to the distubutor vac line occasionally falls out. when this occurs the engine dies when idled.
