Hi All, Just packed away my 87 shorty for the winter. It has been in storage for about 35 years with a little summer running now and then. Bought new... I always wanted a 4 speed 'on the floor'. When first sold it was promoted by Mopar as a thrift truck. I have had the motor and interior redone...looks brand new. The engine (225 CID) has a lumpy cam that I asked for on the rebuild... she has a little under 900 miles on her. Next summer I have a 2 barrel intake manifold a BBD 2 brl carb and will also install Dutra duels plus a performance exhaust system. As you guys know this truck came factory equipped with a very low geared rear end. What new differential would you suggest for my truck. I not building a drag truck, just trying to add a little more pick up in 1st gear and more response on the upper end; I hope to end up with a quick Super six. Does anyone have a guess for possible increased horsepower? Thanks, any ideas on the rear end or anything else?
Best regards, Dodgeball

Which 4 speed? OD or not? Do you know what gear it has out back now? My 85 came with a 3.21. Which seems about right. If I were to change it I'd go 3.55 -3.73. Especially if going to an OD.

If overdrive I would go with a 3.91 gear. I had one stock with that ratio and it drives very nice. That gives you a final drive ratio of about 2.80 which is plenty high for cruising on the highway. My son ran 4.30's in his Dart with the OD transmission and even that was fine. That would still only be about a 3.09 ratio.

My 79 /6 d100 had an 833 OD in it with a 3.91 and it was a good combo.
On another note my 97 wrangler with a 4.0 inline 6 and a 5 speed (5th was OD on that one) and 3.07 gears would lug, I ran in 4th alot more than I would have liked to.... 3.07 was too low. With same size tires as I run on all my old 1/2 tons. (235/75-15)
