I have a 1976 D100 with the the plastic "burlwood" woodgrain instrument cluster surround. The brown plastic has mostly faded to pink. Is there a way to restore the original color? I have read that sometimes a heat gun can be used on some plastics (like door panels) to bring the colors up from below the UV damaged layers of plastic on top. Has anyone tried this on an instrument cluster surround?

I'd pick up an X-Acto knife and a roll of this before I'd risk bringing a heat gun near that dash bezel, which is made of something like ABS without much tolerance for heat.

I used that on woodgrain siding before. I have read in several places that a heatgun can be used to draw the esters up to the surface on the plastic door panels on Dodge vehicles, so I had hoped I could do it with the dash cluster. I will try to find a contact paper with a similar burlwood grain, or I might just cover it in vinyl or gorilla fur.
