This was bolted to the cylinder head completely disconnected. I don’t know what it is, the engine runs fine without it, but I would like to know what it is.

That is part of the emissions / Vacuum System from a ~1979 vehicle, and possibly other years. I am not sure if it is slant 6 specific or not. I just tossed one in the can from a 1979 Volare' Duster that I am parting out.

I can get a specific on the exact name of the part for you later, as I have 2 1979 F body cars stored here at the house this winter.

Ah, ok. So it’s emissions. I wonder what its purpose was and what just disconnecting it does. Thanks for the help.

It is a vacuum Solenoid.
There is an electrical connection to it that turns on and off the vacuum signal from the carb to some of the other components it is interconnected to. I am not sure of the other specific responsibilities of the part.

It essentially is an electric valve between carb vacuum and the vacuum amplifier.

I'm curious what year and model vehicle this part was taken off of.

Hmm. I do not know if that would originally have been on a 1975 Truck engine, as most of the Trucks had zero emissions in 49 states until 1979, I believe. It is possible that your engine has been swapped at some time in the truck's life with a car engine.

Cheers!

That is not the case. Light-duty truck emissions regs were less stringent than passenger car regs (and heavy-duty trucks were less stringent than light-duty trucks) but not nonexistent – and not just in California.

Yeah, it’s not true.

This is a family owned (since new) farm truck with 23,000 original miles. It’s total history is well known.

Vacuum cutoff solenoids like this were used (in various years and applications) to:

• enable/disable vacuum spark advance (first application was '71 California cars – coupled with a 3rd-gear switch on the shift linkage for manual transmissions or to an over-30 speed sensor for automatic transmissions)
• enable/disable EGR (coupled to coolant temperature sensors to preserve at least some pretense at driveability when the engine was cold)
• probably do other things, too

Well I certainly do appreciate all the responses. It’s a shame this forum doesn’t get more activity. No doubt there are a lot of knowledgeable folks here.

Now that I know its function I did find it. Looks like Chevrolet used the same part.

Is there an electrical connection?
Could it be the vacuum reservoir?
Here is my 76 emission decal.

Thanks for the info Dan and others.

My truck /ramcharger /van is/ were v8 equipped and they have / had no emissions for '77 and '78, not even an egr or prehewas ted intake / warm air tubes.

Those 3 and some old memories from when I was a kid at dad's car lot was what I was thinking of.

Thanks for the confirmation of the family lineage of your truck. I bet it is a nice one.
