As you know I am switching back over to my 4 speed in my 65 Valiant. I won't need the starter relay for the automatic that only starts
in neutral and park. Am I correct that I can just use the automatic relay if I run the black wire, that leaves the relay and goes to the transmission, to a ground? Just double checking! Thanks

That wire should be brown, but yes, that's the one you should ground.

Why not connect that wire to a clutch "safety" switch? That way the starter will not engage unless the clutch pedal is depressed. (Safety first)

Probably for the same reasons I don't want power windows, power seats, door locks, dimmer on the turn signals, fuel injection, traction control and and 100 other things on my car. :D :D But your point is well taken. I'll consider it.

I don't remember on earlier cars, but that's the way my 70 manual transmission Barracuda is wired from the factory.

I have had several vehicles, over the years, with and without a neutral/clutch safety switch. On more than one occasion I have hit the starter with the vehicle in gear, and the engine cranked. Luckily the engine did not start, before I released the starter.

I had bought my first slantsix car at 1981. It was a 1966 Dart with 170 cu.in. engine and 3 spd manual ”tree on three”. As there was an option to big block 225 I bought one. We did the swap in a car repair garage at the service station in a day they did not had other use for the space.

After few hours the engine was swapped and dressed with the original accessories. It was time for 1st start. I went to the drivers seat, turn the ignition on. Oil pressure light give me information that electricity is on. So I pulled the manual choke on, pushed the throttle few times, pulled the clutch pedal down and turn the key.

It started immediately as the original carburetor was full of gasoline. I had clutch down but it was not adjusted well and I had also the reverse gear on. The car really jumped backwards!

I paid all the glasses of the garage door I broke with my car.

Not a clutch safety switch can help such a fool.
