Post subject:  Distributor options, ignition options

Maybe some of you saw my previous posts, and I am pretty new here and will apologize in advance in case these topics have been beaten to death. But I am finishing up my build of a vintage looking slant six front engine dragster. It is running, or was, so I am looking for some opinions or info on ignition systems. Even though I tried to make the dragster look like it was from 1964ish, I am using a later (1974?) stock Chrysler electronic ignition distributor and module. I got the distributor at a flea market and it came with two control modules. One ran for a little while and quit and the other just didn't work. I should mention that I wasn't using a ballast resistor. I didn't think I needed one because is was never going to run for very long being a dragster. Both the modules and distributor were used . The distributor tests fine the modules not. So would you trust one of those $38 Ebay knock off modules? add a blast resistor?
One of my objectives building this thing was to be as frugal (some might say stingy!) as possible so I am not interested in any expensive HEI conversion stuff, besides, if the stock Electronic distributor is not really true to the 60's spirit of the build, the HEI thing is way out.
As an option, and what I would really like to find, is a dual point distributor if Chrysler ever made one. I find references to Mallory dual point distributors, that would do also. So what say you? Knock off Electronic control box? Single point stock distributor? Dual point distributor? (Anyone have one they would part with?).
Thanks for your collective wisdom.

I'm sure many here will say a GM HEI module.
I don't know how you have it wired but you can use a 4 pin on anything with a Mopar electronic ignition setup but you can't run a 5 pin in place of a 4 pin. The first systems had the 5 pin deal.

I would use the slant six electronic distributer you have. Go to a salvage yard and get a Ign coil/module/mount from a chevy S-10 V-6 or similer. Simple wireing and no ballast resister to go bad.

Follow the HEI upgrade recipe .

Thanks for the replies. In brief, I had a single point stock distributor that I didn't think was any good. It was pretty clean, but the mechanical advance was stuck, I thought that someone had disabled it, and the lobes looked worn. But after a good cleaning and some Super Lube it was fine.
I am running a Pertronix Ignitor I in both my 1967 Dodge D100 and 1960 Ford F100 (223 inline six). The one in the Ford lasted 9 years, so I would call that reliable enough. I had a complete used Pertronix set up for a slant six in the glove box of my D100 for a spare and thought why not just run that on the dragster with the cleaned up distributor. It didn't matter if the lobes were worn or not, what could be simpler? No rewiring, no ballast resistor, besides an extra wire between the coil and distributor, nothing else shows. Done.
Put it on and it fired right up.
I know some of you are not big Pertronix fans, but they have served me well so why not.
Anyway, thanks again for the replies.

The Pertronix should be fine. Most people have good service with them. The only downside is if it does crap out, you can't walk into just any auto parts store and pick one up like I can my HEI module. If I had one I'd use it! :D :D Hope to see you at a race sometime!
