I second what Dan said.

How much of the original choke system is present? You will need the choke thermostat itself, the wire running off one of the field wires on the alternator to provide power to the electric assist on the choke thermostat, the resistor that is inline with the positive feed to the electric assist on the choke thermostat, and hopefully you have the open choke pocket on the exhaust manifold.

Or, do like Dan suggests and do the "Super Choke" conversion. Simpler, better design. Well worth the money.

Also, remember that you need the slant six specific choke linkage for the choke thermostat. The slant six choke linkage piece will readily bolt to a V-8 Carter BBD.

If the truck is an automatic, I strongly recommend abandoning looking for the two barrel kickdown linkage and just go with a cable kickdown.

I'm working on a 1984 Dodge 4x4 for Mike Sargeant. It has a Holley TBI on it and he wants it converted back to a Super Six setup. I need some help figuring out the choke setup. When I did mine I just hooked a coat hanger to the choke lever and ran i through the firewall, but I want to know how it originally hooked up, since Mike would like it as close to stock as I can get it. I would like to see pictures of the choke setup from something like a '78 Volare to see how it works or any pictures of a choke setup with the Carter 2bbl & a Slant. The factory setup worked poorly when everything was new, and it's not adjustable. Get a № 1232 electric choke kit and install it. It includes everything needed, bolts right on, and is adjustable.

The trans system already has a cable so I will stick with that. I have the open choke pocket exhaust but I wasn't aware of the resistor for the choke. I'll check out what Dan suggested. Wiring is not a problem, it's one of my specialties.

If the 1984 wiring is still mostly intact, you should find that the + feed for the choke thermostat electric assist resistor is actually fed from the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge/idiot light. Chrysler's thinking was that they didn't want the choke to open if the ignition key was left on with the engine not running, so they used the oil pressure sending unit as a switch for the electric choke thermostat assist. Engine running = oil pressure = power to the electric choke. Engine off = no oil pressure = you can leave the key on and the choke won't open.

I have installed two of those kits. They come with a heat sensor than can be conventiently mounted on one of the empty bolt bosses omn the top of the head. That it. + and - and Bob's your uncle, or Dan, in this case. The action on the conversion chokes is much smoother than the factory system and they are fully adjustable. You won't regret it. The one hiccup is that you may need to bend the mounting bracket slightly to get the smoothest movement of the linkage.
