according to the engine manual the rocker shaft should have a flat on one end mine does not. On the big blocks the oil hole is under the loaded side of the rocker arm but I have looked at two different six cylinder shafts and found the hole not under the loaded side. does any one know the correct location for the shaft/oil holes??

I checked the shaft out of a /6 engine that I have here in the shop and the wear area (shiny spot) isn't in the same place as the oiling hole. That seems odd to me. Wouldn't it work better if the oiling hole was right at the heavily loaded section of the rocker arm? It looks like if the shaft is reversed from the factory installed location then it will oil better. But if that is the case, why would the factory engineers do it wrong? They usually have very good reasons for doing what they do.

Doesn't the oil come out of the of the bolt hole closest to the firewall, isn't that why that hole takes the special step bolt that is differnt than the rest of the mounting bolts? Or is that not the question?

you a right the the oil feeds the shaft from the bolt closest to the firewall but what I am talking about is the oil hole that feeds the rocker arm there is a oil hole under each rocker arm if you read andyf's post you will get a better description of my question.

The locating "flat" is hard to find on many rocker shafts.
The feed holes are not directly under the load area but off-set towards the valvespring / intake manifold, roughly at the 4:00 position when look at the front of the shaft.

The engineers have this worked-out so the feed hole and groove cross-over the shaft's feed holes and alturnate the oil flow between the rocker arm passageway to the tip and the roecker arm's load surface on the shaft.
