Post subject:  Slant 6 Street race discussion
Since this topic is getting a lot of discussion I thought it might be better to create its own topic. That way it is easier to follow what is being said.

PLEASE POST ALL COMMENTS ABOUT THIS PROPOSAL HERE.

Here is the suggestions that Dennis had about the rules for this class:

How about some real simple rules:
1. Street tires, mufflers, licensed, and insured.
2. Must pass Tech.
3. Do a drive from the track to Winchester and back. (About 40 miles)
4. Put them right into staging to make a pass. (No refueling, if ya can't make 40 miles and one pass on a tank, it ain't a street car)
5. Run heads-up, whatever tree the majority wants.
6. No whining if you get your doors caved in.


This would excluded cars like Hargis and Parker unless they wanted to go to the trouble of inspecting them, running street tires and putting mufflers on them.

What about this, Make a 20+ mile road trip and return to the track. Pull into staging and make three back to back passes and reward the highest average ET?

Tom i have a race car not a street car we will race each other in the points championship. I was just making suggestions for the street class. Rodney will feel the same way as me. I might not have the the best car or the fastest car but im a competator. Don't tread on me or Rodney we can and have jumped on faster and better cars than ours. I'll see you at Paradise it ain't over until i win. Why do you insult past slant six champions. :o :o

I like points of many who have responded. However for us we are still 6-8 hours from the closest race and that's to far to drive our street car. A couple hours, maybe but 6-8 is a long way. But if we put it on a trailer and haul it down, then we can't run the street class? right ?

Here is what I like.

1) A race a little closer to home (Northeast)
2) I like Doc's rules. ie. a bracket race with a reward for the fastest ET
And the bracket winner.
3) I also think it was a good idea to have the 2 street cars meet the 2
race cars in a final 4. Would it be possible to have the Fastest ET car in
the first round get in automatically and then the winner of the street bracket be the second entry into the final 4.
4) If we come to any races it will be with our car on a trailer. I just can't see us driving a car 3-400 miles and then having a failure and no way home. We've had two major failures on our car in less than a year. And this is a true street car that was driven about 6000 miles last year.
5) Is This just a one race thing? It would just be at one race a year?

Lastly I would like to say I will never have a 9,10 or 11 second car but I certainly do appreciate everyone who has built such magnificent machines and brought attention to the slant six. I enjoy reading about them and some day hope to get to a race or two. And when I get there I'll run whatever bracket you'll let me run and I will have a great time whether or not I win.

I feel that a pre-race 20-40 mile drive as suggested by Dennis is the way to keep the real race cars from sneaking into this "True Street" run-off. :roll:
I do think that towing the car to the event should be allowed, just because it is the only way some of the long distance people can safely partisipate.
As for how many of these races we do, it all depends on partisipation, if this is a popular thing, we will do as many as the numbers allow.

Ron - Relax I am not insulting anybody. :roll: I was making a point that cars like yourself and Rodney(people who attend quite a few /6 races) would not fit into these rules. This means that car count would have to depend on cars that are currently not showing up on a regular basis. The best example of a car or cars that are attending more than one race, that would fit in the above rules, are Seymour and Lou. This means that a one race deal would probably be the best option. It would give everyone who wanted to compete a chance to make plans.

I being new and not raced at a /6 race would have to say I don't like the 20 to 40 mile qualification drive, as I do drive my car to events. This past summer I drove 3 hours to Columbus, and 5 1/2 hours to Norwalk. Adding another drive to that would eliminate me from participating as when I get to the event, I just want to make passes and stay. Also, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Don't make to many rules. The simplar the better. How about if you are currently inspected, tagged, and use street tires you can participate in a street class. Every one knows that if you have a fast car there will always be someone faster (or will be) and if you are slow there is someone slower. If it got to complicated, I would probably just run in a Sportsman Class.

Tom, my Cuda meets the requirements for street class, except I have been using slicks. I had 8 slicks given to me (freebie), but would have no problem buying a set of DOT tires. I also have no problem doing a street drive prior to the race. Despite what Dennis thinks, it is a street driver. I would/could do a 100 mile drive, as long as all the street cars did. That said, I WILL NOT drive to the race, it will be trailered. You know as well as I do, anything can happen/break. How would I get it home, when home is at least 9 hrs away for me.

I'd like to get involved in this, but my car is no "king of the street" or anything, just a quick street/strip 6. I like the idea of a bracket prize for the slower cars. How about coming up with a few basic classes for heads up like nitrous/no nitrous, normally aspirated/turbo etc? Also, any DOT approved tire will qualify as a street tire, correct? A drag radial for instance.

P. S. - If I come I will be driving to from my 10-20 to the gathering (several hours), and to the track. My trailer's staying at home where it belongs! ;)

Allowing the cars to be towed to the event just seems to make sense as long as they meet the rest of DS's requirements. I talked with Seymour and he indicated that CC might be willing to add this to the program. He also said that if DS was willing to put up the $$ he could set the rules.

Dennis if you are serious about this maybe you should give Seymour a call.

That sounds like good sense to me, Tom. The guys fronting the dough should get the say on the rules. Dennis' simple set proposed earlier is fine by me. Reluctantly, I agree that trailering should be allowed to the track.

One possibility regarding Slanted Mind's concern is that anyone who drives to the track shouldn't be required to do a Mickey Mouse cruise 40 miles unless they want to. I don't care either way. I drove my '64 to CC 900 miles round trip and Bristol 400 miles round trip this year with no issues (non-damaging oil press gauge noted :) ).

I wouldn't mind a "fastest street car" award at some or all races, since the two races I made with my '64 this year, I was the fastest 8) . However, the goal of one big street shootout a year would be more interesting. Of course, the boosted/NOS cars will beat me, but it'll be fun to run and watch. And then again, you never know what I may show up with...

I like the idea of the cars that are drove to the track are exempt from the 40 mile qualifier drive. How would that be regulated though? I also agree that the people forking out the money should make the rules. Just keep it simple. Too many rules are intimmidating to newbies.

Well, if I'm gonna be in charge, there will be few rules. It will be really simple:
1. Car must pass Tech at Clay City. (Should be real easy)
2. DOT tires and mufflers only, no open headers or slicks.
3. Car must have proof of registration and insurance.
4. Car must complete the trip in to Winchester and back, no stops for fuel.
5. Cars will be put in staging for a run as soon as we return from the drive and make a run. You may check tire pressure, but that's it.
6. A total of 3 time runs will be made, tuning will be allowed between runs, but no refueling or changing of NOS bottles. Cars will be pitted together, so it will be easy to watch.
7. I will have the staging steward draw chips for lane choice and pairings.
8. Any car that fails to complete the drive or first run is out, PERIOD! I will have someone watching the finish line to make sure you are under power too.

As far as how the car gets there, I don't care. The drive/first pass will separate the posers anyway. The first pass will put the NOS cars at a disadvantage too, but that's the way it goes. (I will probably field an NOS car myself)

Low qualifier won't mean squat to me. The one who will get the money is the winner of the race. That means you will not only have to be fast, but consistent and be able to drive.

I am completely open as to what style of tree we use. Since it will all be heads-up, I favor a .400 Pro tree, but that's just because even I can't go red on a .400 tree. Majority will rule.

What will it take to win this? Same as any other heads-up race. A fast RELIABLE car, and a golden horse shoe in your butt. :shock:

Myself? I'm guessing we will have a couple cars in the high 12's. :D
