Post subject:  backspacing?

I just got a pretty good deal on rims for my '64 Dart, but I'm kinda worried about the fit. They're 14x7 Cragars with 3 3/4 inches of backspacing...I want to put 225 60/R14s will these fit on the back of the dart?

I just want to point out that I did read GuyLR's recent post that is very similar to this one, but I'm wonderng if the fact that the diameter on my wheels will be a little over 2" less will make any difference.

Josh, If you're running a 7-1/4 rear end then your tires and wheels will probably just work because of the smaller diameter. I now agree that the best backspace for narrow A Bodies is probably 4-1/2". On my setup with the 8-3/4 I finally had to bite the bullet and buy two more wheels from AR with the custom 4-1/4" backspacing. With the 225/60-15 tires it still rubs slightly when I hit a big bump. My car has 5 leaf V8 springs too. For the 15s not to rub on my car I'll need to go narrower on the tire, say 205/65-15 or maybe 215/60-15.

4 1/2" backspace will put the tire against the spring. 4" is closer to ideal with a 7" wheel. I know 3 3/4" BS will work on the '67 up A bodys, not sure on the pre '67 with their smaller wheelwell.
I'm talking of the rear tire, don't know what clears on the front, I've always run a smaller front wheel/tire.

Go here http://number6.homelinux.net:8080/gallery/album25/abg for a photo of my '65 Barracuda with 8-3/4 rear end, 225/60-15 tire and 15x7" wheel with 3-3/4" backspace. Note that there is a good inch clearance on the inside at the spring but none on the outside of the wheelwell housing. If you click on the photo one time it will enlarge even more to show the detail. For my setup a 4-1/2 would be perfect. The 3-3/4" 15x7 wheels work great on the front with a 205/60-15 tire. See here http://number6.homelinux.net:8080/galle ... 25?&page=1
I wish I still had my old '65 Valiant Wag with the round rear wheel cutout. Then I think the 3/-3/4" backspace would not have been a problem.

Cool. Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain at this point that the rims that I purchased are the wrong size lug pattern... The guy I bought them from said that they would fit my 5 on 4" pattern, then it came out later that they were unilug rims. So I suppose it's partly my fault for not asking more questions before I actually paid for them, but I think the anticipation of getting cool rims for my car overrode my usually skeptical disposition. Oh well, I've contacted the guy about this debacle, but he's not being very responsive so I may just have to resell them...so, uh...if anyone's interested in some Cragar SS rims that fit 5 on 4 1/2" to 5" I may have some in the near future...

Hey Guy,
Beautiful '65! Is that a NGMC sticker I see in the window? I haven't seen your car at any of the shows or meetings/picnics. It makes me miss my blue 64 and black 65 back home in AZ. Yours reminds me of my blue 64. Mine is just much rougher than yours!
