I have a friend that regularly pulled a loaded car trailer with a /6 equipped half-ton truck. 2000lbs trailer dry weight, 3500lbs car average, so 5500lbs. Just remember you are taxing things and take it easy. As long as you get a suitably rated hitch, etc., it will be safe. The issue would be the longevity of your mechanicals, but I personally don't think you will have a problem. I use my '88 V8 truck to pull my car trailer and it is eqipped with a cheesy (for a truck) 904 based auto trans originally designed for a six. No problems so far (I do have to change the fluid regularly), but I have a 518 OD trans to install eventually. "DW" |

i once did a 400mile journy with a 2200lbs car hauling trailer (electric brakes) and a 4200lbs firebird on it, no problems at all, a bear going up hills, but thats to be expected, i had 3.55's and an OD 4spd with a heavy duty 10" clutch. Justin |

Towed a 5000 lb boat & trailer (total weight, no trailer brakes) with my '87 1/2 ton slant six auto 370 miles over mountains. Of course I had overload springs and a class III receiver. Hills were slow going in second gear and she definitely came up to temperature (about 215*F), but never once had a problem. (Tranny is still going strong at 110k miles) Take 'er easy and watch your oil and temp gauges religously and you should be fine. -S/6 |

My '84 D-100 was used regularly to tow other cars on a dolly, including another 440 cuin powered D-150 truck. My D-100 is stock, with a 1bbl carb, A-833 OD 4spd tranny, and 3.55 gears. It's eaten a few clutches; but, but it does the job. Just take it easy. |

I towed a trailer loaded between 6000# and 8000# without trailer brakes 600 miles from OK to NE. I also had 5000# on the truck. ( 77 3/4 ton crew cab) I averaged 11 mpg, and was able to pass a few cars. I would not recommend running without trailer brakes and acceleration was poor but I didn't have any real problems. |
