Post subject:  Question about messed up transmission

Hi all,

I'm looking at a car that has a supposedly rebuilt 727. The thing slips in drive, with an audible whine that changes with engine speed. Putting the gearshift in L1 results in immediate and normal gear engagement, as does reverse. What is this likely to be?

Does it slip in all ranges, or just direct? It sounds like clutches and/or a clutch piston seal, probably in the front clutch if you're saying it does not slip in first or reverse. You never know, maybe the filter is just clogged resulting in low pressure. Of course driving it has probably already burned up the clutches.

I dunno, I didn't drive the car. I just put it in drive while idling, and saw that it didn't really engage. Revving the motor slightly produced a feeble attempt at forward motion, and a whine from the transmission that changed with engine speed. Putting the gearshift in L1 produced a firm engagement into gear. Reverse also felt fine. At no point did I actually move the car more than a foot or so. It's not my car-it's one for sale. The fluid was full and somewhat brown.

It's toast. Use that as a bargaining chip, then check the filter if/when you get it. You never know...

Well you know that the back band is working (Low-reverse). that whine is probably the converter or front pump dying, pump is probably shot and not putting out enuf pressure to engage the clutches. There are 2 clutch packs and 2 bands in a 904 or a 727. The front band only works in 2nd gear (either D or "2"), if I remember right the front clutch is high (3rd) gear and the back one is the "forward" clutch, that engages any time that you are moving forward, regardless of what gear you are in. I have the A500 out of my Dakota as we speak.

Sounds like a blown front clutch pack.
It is most likely tranny rebuild time.

Yeah, I'm probably not gonna get the car. The guy was talking about taking $1300 for it. The body is REALLY nice, the interior is decent, having splits on the seats from the sun. The motor seems to be fine, but the trans sort of does it in. Of course, I have a perfectly good trans that I could put in there, but that involves a good bit of labor I don't have any time for. Plus, I don't need the car at all. I just want a good running big block c body. I believe that the car is probably worth $500 or $600 in its present shape. I'll probably just wait until an early 70's big block c body comes along, which is what I really want anyway. Anyone who waved one of those in front of my face would be in serious danger of selling a car.
