Post subject:  Occaisional ignition switch failure.

Car is a '70 Dart with a '74 Duster steering column, and ignition switch. Every once in a blue moon, the car won;t start. Have tracked the culprit down to no valtage coming from the switch to the ignition while in the "crank" position. This only happens once in awhile, but makes the car somewhat unreliable as dependible transportation. I have several back up cars. The ignition was an orange box Mopar electronic, and then switched to a MSD 6. The failure has happened with both ignitions. The car runs fine, and the connections all seem to be OK. They test out OK mechanically, and with meters. Am I stuck with tearing this stearing column apart to replace the switch, or is their a creative fix for this? The ballast resister is not used with the MSD, so that is bypassed. Can I wire up this switch some way so I don;t need the "crank" connection? Can the switch be cleaned with WD40 somehow? Thanks.

I replaced the lock and switch in my Feather Duster when it crapped out a year or so back... It took about 1-2 hours (was meticulous about not losing any critical peices....and had to pull a 'spare' out of another column...).

So you used a junk yard piece and not a new one? After taking the turn signal cancel plate, I threw out the old column. Wish now I had kept it. Any suggestions regarding a reliable brand of new. Aftermarket electronics have nortoriously high failure rates.
