Hi, My name is Emory and I am a Newbie to the Group. I have a Question That I need an answer for. I bought a 1981 Dodge Ram 150 Stepside From a Salvage Yard for $100.00 The body is in Excellant Cond. However when I fired it up The engine had a Knock in it Found that it is #6. Took the engine out to rebuild it But I have Not been able to Figure out how to remove the Oil screen and tube. Have tried to gently twist it but! It will not move. Could someone tell me how to remove it from the block? Thank you Emory |

Hi Emory. The pick up tube and screen should come out with a little twisting and pulling up on it. Then back flush solvent through the top of the tube and out the screen. Carb or brake cleaner also works. |

The one in my slant was stuck so bad I had to use a set of channel locks to get it out. Be gentle and don't get 'mean' on it, you just have to get it loose and it'll twist out. -D.Idiot |

Ihave a small pipe wrench that works great for this. Vise grips also work well. I set the wrench 180 degrees off-set from the pick-up screen and use two hands to twist like it's a "T" handle. It will come right out once you break it loose. DD |

Ditto on the gentle twisting method to get it out. However, when you reinstall it make sure you follow the method detailed in the shop manual so it sits flush to the bottom of the oil pan. Reed |

Are you looking for someone to tell you the tube is threaded into the block? I think so. Anyway, the slants that I worked on all had the oil pickup tube threaded into the block, it should just unscrew same as a normal bolt. |

Thank's for all the Info. I will try and give it a Little more Twisting and see if that will work. I sure do not want to break it. If anyone has a Good Slant for sale in the Atlanta, Georgia And South to the Jacksonville, Fla area for sale I would Be intrested. Or a Good Lead on a Rebuild Kit W/Crankshaft. Emory |

Ok! I got the Oil Screen out! And it is Threaded. Thank's to all that replied. But! I do not think that I am going to build this engine. The Rod Bearing's are .80 So what does everbody think about going back with a 318 for the pick-up. It has a 4 Speed in the floor. Will I have to change Bell Housing, Fly Wheel, Etc? I am looking for any advise. Thank you Emory |

Yep, you'll need a set of 318 motor mounts, a 318, along with the flywheel, bellhousing, and clutch...It has a 4 Speed in the floor. Will I have to change Bell Housing, Fly Wheel, Etc? In my area these aren't getting easy to find since small block manual swps became popular, maybe you'll get lucky at a yard in your area.(Of course if you're going V-8 don't over look the 360 either...). At least the slant would be a 'drop in'... -D.Idiot |

The only substitute for cubic inches is cubic money. If your going to swap in a V-8, go for a big block. The bigger the better. The conversion will cost the same, big block or small block. |

The pick up tube will not unscrew out of the block while motor is still in the truck. It will only move 1/3 turn before hitting crossmember.  Cecil |
