I know some of you racers probably use and abuse the slant right from 0 miles, but for those who do not, how long do you go before really flogging a fresh slant? Currently my rebuild only has 2.5 miles on it, and it must sit through the winter before I can take her to the strip to see what she can do next summer. My current plan is to get about 1000 miles on the slant before I really abuse her (need powerbrake pics too ;) ) As always all opinions are appreciated.

I would get at least 500 on it, and I've done 1000 on both the new motors I've built. Race motors don't have to last very long, in most people's opinions.

Guess I should have mentioned the use. This truck will be a street/strip vehicle, driven from late spring to early fall only. I would guess about 90% street and 10% strip (Not many drags up here  )

By no means is this my only transportation, but I do not want to blow it up or spin a bearing before I get to have any fun with it ;)

I am just really eager to see what she can do (I am hoping for mid 16's in the 1/4...for now)

I tend to be real easy on the engine until I do the first oil change. On a street driven vehicle, that can be 50 to 100 miles.

If all looks well I tend to dive the engine normally for the next 500 miles, normally means rev. to it up some but I usually keep it under 4000. I like to be sure to do some decelerations to help pull some oil up into the ring packs.

After the second oil change, let her rip.

When I built my "Screamin' Six" /6 a couple years ago, I took it easy on the motor for the 20 minute cam break in, and about 2 miles of driving. Then I was doing 5000+ rpm shifts and WOT runs. Couldn't help it, I just HAD to see how fast it would go!

33,000 miles later, it's still running good.

I had just read in hot to build big block mopars, that after 10 min everything is about as broke in as it is going to get! I have also read that it takes about 20 hours of running before a cam is broke. But i would go the 500 miles on a street motor taking it kinda easy, change the oil then do it like i do it every day"Reshaping the floor boards with my right foot!"

I also feel the 500 mile theory is the way to go...so I usually do the first 500 miles as soon as I can, change the oil and filter, then get stuck into it.

i've always broken the cam in, and then run it easy with some mild high gear 3/4 throttle loads to help seat the rings... no real romps until after 500 miles, and no long highway runs until after 500 (vary engine speeds if on the highway)... fresh oil and filter after cam break in, again @ 100 miles, @500, @2500, or something like that :)

ok, i'll buy all of this but what do you do if your like me and only put 500-1000 miles a year on my cars. that would mean i would have to wait up to a year or more before i can romp on them. that wont happen!! i go out, cruise it easy first for a bit and change the oil, then do some decent pulls on it, then do some full throttle pulls and change the oil again, then let 'er rip. if i have 50 miles on them, that is alot. plus my new engine machinest is one of those that firmly believes that you break it in like it will be run. he has some of the fastest motors around here in all forms of motorsports. but i'll be a bit more conservative and stick to my plan.
