Hi all,

I know that a few people have experimented with megasquirt or other fuel injection. I have the tank dropped on my Barracuda to fix some leaks. Has anybody with FI used the existing pickup, or did you go with a bigger 3/8 inch pickup? What did you use, and where did you put it in the tank? How much HP can a 5/16 pickup support?

Thanks,

Greg

With my gm based fuel injection I used the stock 5/16" line, including the pickup, rubber and metal lines.

Megasquirt does not need a 3/8 pickup from the tank, a 5/16 single line setup works fine. I run a megasquirt system on a 258 I-6 with a chrysler EFI fuel pump and regulator mounted on a cross member next to the fuel tank. The injectors are 24 LBS/HR good for better then 200 HP.

While line size may be a limiting factor, I think the fuel pump will be the first limiting factor.

Wether you do multiport or throttle body injection would also be a factor as to the total throughput/pressure you would need.

I used the 5/16 pick-up when I first did the EFI conversion. When I added the turbo I used a 3/8 pick-up along with bigger injectors. You might want to think about adding a nipple for the EFI return line while you have the tank out. The pick-up can be easily changed with the tank in place.

The way I have my pump setup is... pickup to brass T, one end of T goes to the return line from regulator, the other side goes to fuel filter, to pump, to pressure side of regulator.

This way you don't need to poke holes for a return. This system works well because the return line always has less pressure then the output of the pump. Instead of a brass T, you can use a metal fuel filter with vapor return line and remove the filter inside.

My car has run in the low 14s with the 5/16" line, so the engine is making about 260 HP at the crank. I will probably use 3/8" line on my next setup since I want to make over 300 HP.

I used a factory pickup with an added return line fitting that I made from plumbing stuff from the hardware store. I just drilled a hole in the pickup plate and screwed a pipe fitting on there with some gasket sealer. I may have used solder to seal it - don't remember as it's been about 6 years since I did it. If I get time, I'll crawl under there and look this week.

Be careful not to ground out the insulated sender wire. I believe you can also use a '72-up sender with built in return line fitting for the charcoal canister system?

Sounds about right. Just as a point of reference, to the best of my knowledge of vehicles of these years: Chrysler used a 5/16 line on every car they produced, no matter what engine size, except for the Hemi engine. That one got the 3/8 fuel line.

Erik,

I suspect you're right about that, and if so, then 5/16" ought to be good to at least 375 HP, since that's what the 440-4V was rated at. I doubt I will get there any time soon. Also, with EFI the fuel pressure is much higher (15-50 psi vs. 4-5 psi for carbs), so the flow will be higher through a 5/16" line.
