Now that I have tricked out the supension on my '69 Dart, I can corner hard enough to smell gas on a really hard, fast corner. Any experience out there with this? Do you think the tank is bad, or just the seal for the tank? Are new seals available? I know there are two seals, one at the filler neck to tank entry, and one at the floor to filler tube seal. |

It's possible it is coming out the vent line underneath the car, although you shouldn't smell it inside the car. This has happened to me in the '64, but only in extreme on-track conditions (long 180 deg sweeper at 40 MPH). Seals are another possibility, and carburetor is another (float bowl vent). Lou |

A bad seal can easily cause that. After a very embarassing incident at a gas station, involving the fire department  , I bought a tank-to-filler neck gasket from Layson's (www.laysons.com). They have all the gaskets, seals, floats, etc. If they just had locking gas caps for my '64 ...

I second slantvaliant's guess. Had the same problem with my '66 Valiant. Replaced the filler-neck-to-tank gasket and "all better". ---Red |

I had the same problem with a 68 Valiant that I had. Turned out the vent line in the trunk that goes through the floor had a small rust hole in it right before it went through the floor. I took a small piece of rubber gas line about 2 inches long and pushed it over the line till it covered the hole up. No more gas fumes in the car. I hate to think about what could have happened if there was a spark in the trunk with all of those gas fumes in it.

I appreciate all the good comments. The battery is in the trunk, so I guess this is no small concern. I will get right on it as they say. |

I've had trouble with the Carter 1bbl throwing gas out of the bowl through the accelerator pump rod hole in the bowl cover. Also had trouble with throwing gas out of the filler neck to gas cap seal. 'Spirited' driving will do that!
