Post subject:  Transmission Coolers on \6?

I have had my 70 swinger for three years (225).

It is primarily stock with a few ignition and wiring upgrades.

It had always ran hot. I have done everything mechanically, even as far as have it stripped down and have cooling channels cleaned out. Still warm. I have changed gauges, radiators, fans, T stats,etc.... I can not dribe it more then 50 miles continuous on freeways, less if hills involved. Can handle hours of city driving though.

The last thing and only thing I have not fooled with is the A904 Trans.

Who has a trans cooler on there car. What kind? Where did they mount? What did it change (if anything) in loss/gain in performance?

Thanks,

Tim

What do you have the timing set at? Too much total timing will make mine overheat on extended highway cruises.

FWIW-my truck came from the factory with the combined radiator/tranny cooler. '87 D150, 225, A999 lock-up auto

1987 S6 trucks came with an A904T automatic transmission. T is for TRUCK.

I do have the two lines running into the radiator, I would like to add a auxillary cooler to take the load off the radiator.

Timing is a possibility. I shall have to invest in a timing light so i can fuss with it myself intsead of trusting my mechanic.

Who has an auxiallary cooler on their \6?

Thanks,

Tim

Thx Craig  To quote Carson....I did not know that....I thought A999's were basically lockup A904's, and I know mine is a lock-up (from watching the rpms take a drop after being in third, at about 40 mph), but I have never had the tranny apart other than changing the filter (110K miles and still going strong!)

Are there any differences between the A904 and A904T besides the lower first gear?

hi, make sure its not running too lean. especially if you run reformulated or oxygenated fuel. makes those slants really glow! ron

I seriously doubt that a cooler will help an overheating problem. If anything, the radiator is probably heating up the trans.

If you want to make a quick check, unhook your lines from the radiator and hook them together with some fuel line hose. You should be able to tell if the trans is your problem or not that way.

This brings a question to mind. Is there any reason that I HAVE to run the factory (in radiator) trans cooler? Seems to me that just an aftermarket cooler would be just fine, and not harm the trans one bit.

I don't know other than what I can pick out of the factory service manuals over the years. All A904 flavors since 1980 had the wide ratio gear set.
The low/reverse band is the "double wrap" variety in the A904T whereas the Car A904 Slant 6 trannys had a single wrap. V8 versions of the 904 (904-LA, 999, etc) used more clutch plates and the double wrap band.
Basically some of the V8 parts are used in the A904T transmission to beef it up a little.

Your torque converter is controlled by the ESA computer. On light throttle it will lock up between 36 and 55 MPH depending on throttle opening (engine manifold vacuum). If you give it some throttle between those speeds you will notice it unlock. Above 55 MPH it stays locked up unless at closed throttle where it unlocks (provided your curb idle ground switch in the carburetor is hooked up and working) Much nicer system than the mechanical-only system used on pre-1986 trucks and cars that went into lock-up at a fixed speed and stayed there.

Interesting note from the 1987 Truck service manual... California models do NOT use a lock-up torque converter.

On the street, in cold weather, the factory cooler is actually a warmer for the trans. A separate cooler can actually run the trans too cold when it's cold out.

From everything I've read, 180* is the optimum temp for a trans.

Do you have a fan shroud? My recently acquired Scamp doesn't but it should.
