| Post subject: | TC on 69 Dart and ring gear |
The torque converter on my Dart was replaced not too long ago before I bought it and I am a little doubtful about whether it's correct. The ring gear tooth count is only 122 and it has the large pilot (1-3/4 I think). I say this because the ring gear teeth are already showing wear on the front face. The starter looks original. Shouldn't I have 123 teeth? I counted twice. |

If you bought a TC for a Slant or a SB v8, then I don't see how it could be wrong. I believe the stock count is 122, but I'm not 100% sure. The wear could be from a faulty starter drive. Some wear is normal. Lou |

| Post subject: | what are the correct tooth counts on a stock converter |
while I have the tranny out, i want to upgrade to a reduction drive starter, [preferrable the newer mini style from say a 1990 dakota V6] My original style direct drive starter has 9 teeth and the ring gear has 148 teeth. I believe the stock chrysler reduction starter has 10 teeth and the corresponding ring gear on the torque converter has 122 [or 123] teeth on the ring gear [according to the comments in this thread] and up until 68, had the small nose I need for my pushbutton tranny. My questions are these: Q1 How many teeth does the later style converter for the reduction drive starter have? Q2 In which year was the reduction starter drive introduced? Q3 In the end, which year of stock converter would work for a reduction drive starter and have the small dia nose? . . . 64 - 66 tranny/engine?? |

| Post subject: | Direct Drive and Reduction Gear Starters |
Q1 How many teeth does the later style converter for the reduction drive starter have? There are 122 teeth on the convertor my 63 dart uses with the reduction gear type starter. Q2 In which year was the reduction starter drive introduced? 1962 (According to Chilton's) And consistent with my 61 valiant having a direct drive starter and the 63 dart having a reduction gear type. Q3 In the end, which year of stock converter would work for a reduction drive starter and have the small dia nose? . . . 64 - 66 tranny/engine?? So 63 to 66 would have the reduction gear starter compatible ring gear and the small nose converter. |
