I have a 64 valiant in great condition, except after 40 years the side mirror droops.

I took it apart only to find that the friction system inside is non-adjustable.

I have some clever ideas of how to restore a higher friction level, but i stumbled upon a cheap, simple interim solution.

Without even needing to take apart the mirror, just drip some *temporary* loc-tite on the ball gyrate the mirror around to coat it. Then adjust the mirror to your desired position and wait an hour or so for it to set.

Of course, this is a "one-driver" solution, but it's cheap, easy, and can be done over and over again until you either come up with another brilliant friction idea!

throughly clean the ball and burnish with course steel wool, clean again and coat the ball with liquid sandpaper and reassemble. At, least that was my solution.

I had the same problem with the mirrors on my 63 Valiant. My solution was to remove the mirror, take out the glass and "peen" the mounts that hold the friction plate on the ball. That has worked well and can be repeated as necessary, but be careful striking the pot metal mounts.

We used a method similar to RMDV's on a snowmobile mirror and it has held up for 2 or three seasons already. In that case there's a small "bell" inside the mount that we tapped with an awl about a dozen times. Still moves when you want it to but stays put on the trail. Don't know what the inside of the car mirror looks like but good luck.
