I would like to upgrade the 9" drums (SBP) on my 72 Dart Swinger. What years / models of donor cars should I be looking for. I don't want to get into the whole front disk, 8 3/4 LBP rear, swap thing, just some better brakes. Thanks.

Well I don't know how dead set you are against disc brakes but the SBP discs would be an excellent fit without starting another complete upgrade train... The only thing you'd have to change would be spindle and lower ball joints, everything else is the same front end wise.

1965 thru 72 A-Body cars are the years you are looking for.
For the SBP 10 inch drums, those were an option starting in 64.

Busboy if you find a setup somewhere, I suggest just getting the spindles and proportioning valve, and splash shields. Buy the lower ball joint new, and this would be a perfect time to get a newer style 2 bolt aluminum master cylinder as well. The 4 - 2 bolt adapter is $40, and a new aluminum mc is $100 (I wouldn't bother with the parts store rebuilt mc, but thats just me.) The rotors for this setup can't be cut very much before they go out of spec, so used ones are likely already toast. New ones availible for $65

You can buy loaded calipers for $80 + $30 core. Used calipers are usually rusted and have pistons in marginal condition. You can trade in your used caliper for a core if you can get them for less then $30 each. Remember the calipers from the parts store won't come with the bracket that holds the hardline to the rubber line, or the crossover tubes. The hardlines are availible new from a few vendors, but you will need the bracket.

I recently did this disc upgrade to my 71 duster just for the same reason of keeping SBP. I have an 8 3/4" SBP A body rear waiting to go in the car, and did not want to have to buy LBP axles for it and LBP wheels to avoid having to carry 2 spares.

9" drums were available as late as '76.

I did the 10" drum conversion on my '66 a couple years ago. I had 11" on the back and 9" on the front. Even with the big back brakes the car was really scary to get stopped at the track when I started running over 90 in the quarter. I physically could not stop the car for the first turn-off at Clay City. I used 10" drums because a buddy gave them to me. It stops a lot better. :D

I completed my conversion to 10 inch drums last year. They are a huge improvement over the original 9 inch. Like Dennis, I was given the 10 inch setup (drums, spindles, backing plates etc...) so I used them at this time in order to avoid the LBP change. I had to replace the Upper Control Arms to the 73-76 series for the new upper ball joint connection. New larger lower ball joints fit into existing lower control arms fine. The drums are the 'finned' style with SBP. When rounding up parts (Upper / Lower Ball joints, shoes, cylinder kit, misc. hardware etc..) everything in the books listed for the 73-76 years. Brake hoses on my setup were different with both ends having female connections. While it was apart, I replaced the torsion bars with .89 bars. An overall good conversion for those that want to upgrade to 10 inch and keep the SBP.

Matt
