| Post subject: | Question about an engine swap |
Hello I drive a 65 Dodge dart gt , 3 sp auto , with a 225. I was woundering if it is at all possible , and if so will the stock drive terrain hold up to a stock 318, if I wanted to put that in my dart? Will a 318 even bolt up to my tranny? I would appreciate all your comments and pics if anyone else has attempted this. Thank you Andrew |

Yep 3 speed autos are A904. Yes, you can swap in a small block 904 tranny along with a 318. I believe tranny mounts may even be the same but can't be positive. Check out http://www.engine-swaps.com/ |

What kind of cars carried a 904 for a V8? I have an oppertunity to get a 318 with the tranny too. the set up comes from a dodge van. I was woundering if at all possible, what it would take to make this kind of swap happen to put it in my dart |

To swap a 318 into a '65 you will need the following: Motor mounts from a 273. Exhaust manifolds from a '65 - '66 273 A-body. Center link from a V8 '65 A-body or a '66 A-body center link. Bigger brakes. Bigger radiator. Heftier torsion bars. V8 Throttle cable. The 904 was available in all RWD vehicles, a van may have a 727 instead so be carefull. The '65 has the ball and trunion driveshaft, that van mostly has a U-joint style so your '65s drive shaft won't work. A driveshaft for a post '66 Dart should work just fine. |

Okay I found out some more on my set up I may be getting. Its a 904 with a 318. The 904 came out of a van , will that still bolt into my set up? |

Why are you set on the 318? In stock form, IIRC, a 318 is about 150-175hp, which is what, 25-50 more then a 225? Is that much more power really worth the hassle? |

The transmission will physically bolt into your '65. The driveshaft will need to be changed to the U-Joint style. Any driveshaft from a '66 or later DART with a 904 and 7.25" rear axle will work just fine. Duster, Demons, Valiants and Baracudas have a shorter wheel base so their driveshafts will not work. |

Did the '65 Darts have the column shifter / cable shifted transmission setup (a transition between the pushbutton/cable and the later column/lever system)? If you put in a later transmission, you may need the lever shift hardware as well. |

The reason I want a 318 is for fuel economy , and anything bigger would really need a rear end change. This set up is coming out of a 1990 van , so im planning on putting a four barrel on it. Im just concern if theirs diffrent bolt patterns , and such for a later year auto? |
