Guys, I tried... I tried to read all the archives for hints on this but after the third page my mind went numb LOL. Once my engine comes back I'm going to tear into the trans. It's the car in my signature, down there. *points* It's a 904, the rearend is a 7&1/4" with unknown ratio, I'm going to guess 2.76. What I'd like to do is knock down the axle ratio and either add a lockup converter circuit or OD to the mix. Ive seen scary posts about adaptor plates and starter relocation problems and OD units with scary price tags if I want to go the latter route so I'm leaning more to the Volare 904 with lockup idea. I just want to get more versatile gearing out of this car without altering its appearance. So this means no, the 7&1/4" stays, maybe with a new pumpkin, and 904 trans only, no chopping driveshafts or sledgehammers to the crossmembers please. Remember, I'm fussy enough to spend gobs of money on unnecessary reinforcements on my "marine" engine so I'm not afraid of HD parts as long as I can hide them. So, any easy answers guys? Anything out there that will bolt up, or fit into my existing case? What do I look for, what years, body styles, for donor parts? I gather 3.23s are more likely to be found in mid 60s cars with 3 on the tree, right? Or is it 3.32? And so on. Thanks! |

No Automatic OD will be a direct bolt-in with the slant. however if you can find an adaptorplate it'll be the first step through the door. but if no chopping driveshafts, etc is out of the question then the Auto-OD is also, the Lock-up converter is really a waist of time, it may get more milage but for anything more than a stock everyday commutercar, its junk. if you want go pull the trans out of a late Volare/Aspen grab the converter also and there ya go, bolt it up and you have a lockup trans Justin |

well now I'm not so sure... Is the lockup 904 really that bad? Is it an unreliable design, or can it just not stand up to race applications? Can it be beefed up? I don't ever see myself putting more than 160 hp to it, and I drive pretty gently. But if it's significantly weaker than my current design, I don't want it. What about 904T trannies? I guess the tailstocks would be different length and I guess I could live with changing my driveshaft if I really had to. But I really do want wider gear ranges. |
