A standard trans mount can be used with a motor plate, but a solid trans mount can not be used with standard motor mounts.

Is it ok to have the motor and transmission both hard mounted in a race car. My present car has a motor plate but the tranny is rubber mounted like it came from the factory. The new car i am looking at has a motor plate and the tranny is also hard mounted. |

Norm, I have heard from some racers is that it is good to have the trans on a flexible mount. Others have said full solids is best. My feeling is that if the chassis is sufficiently stiff, then full solids will work as long as the motor/trans are bolted up in a non-stressed way. This would mean playing with spacers/shims so that the bolts holding the engine/trans do not "draw down" the motor/trans into position, but the mounts perfectly meet them. If the chassis is flexible, then when it twists, the motor and trans cases will be stressed and might break. The Mopar Chassis Manual is supposed to have recommendations on this. Lou |

The general concensus is that if you've mounted the motor with solid units then you should run a "soft" trans mount. Personally, i run solid alum. blocks as my motor mounts and a poly trans mount. In a race car with a motor plate you can run solid everything under the consideration that the chassis is tied and fairly stiff. However, i would only do such in a drag car. If you're road racing or autocrossing the solid motor and soft trans combo seems to be the hot ticket. Rmember kids, busted tailshafts are no fun... <G> -JYH 64 Dart, yeah it's V8 but it only runs on 6 most of the time... |
