We're going black with the interior of my son's '74 Dart Sport. Anyone know where I can get my hands on some carbon fiber material, so we can replace the woodgrain on the dash?

Do you have the ability to use wood? I've been thinking about redoing my dash but the plastic stuff looks wrong. A real wood-grain dash would give a retro look, though I also saw something else really classy. I think it was someone on this site that posted a picture of their dash and they replaced the wood grain with diamond plated metal and it looked really slick with the black interior. Either way, just some suggestions from someone who doesn't know how to work with carbon fiber and really isn't much into it.

check car crafts web sight and search for carbon fiber. They have a pretty interesting article on making fiber panels and a link to a supplier

We're definitely not stuck on staying original with Aaron's car (he chose to paint it Viper Race Yellow.) We're going with the black interior for its stark contrast to the yellow (it was the Parchment ... light tan.) The seats will all be re-covered using black vinyl with charcoal cloth inserts. We want to bring some of the yellow inside by maybe accenting the black seats with yellow welting.

The wood grain just isn't going to fit the program. We're toying with the idea of the carbon fiber, because of its dark tones and sturdy look. They do make yellow vinyl with the carbon fiber's woven pattern, but that might be a little too bold.

Anyone out there updating their interior to something more modern?

try the website www.ffcobra.com/FAQ/cf.html

they show you how to make carbon fiber panels

also read the las t page of the article where they talk about price

seems what you would pay $600 for cost them about $75 and labor

thought about making some panels and stuff on the side for extra income

Have you thought about" Engine turning" this can be had through " plastic laminate distributers". The smallest size they generaly sell is 2' by 4'. Sorry but carbon fiber in that area/function has always seemed a little too faux-faux for me, but thats just an opinion and we all have one of those 8) Bruce J.

How about a much cheaper but just as good looking solution? Try to find a sign shop that does alot of race cars(circle track or drag) and get a few feet of carbon fiber decal and trim to fit yourself, after you have the c/f decal on the put some clear decal on top of that to add some depth and you have carbon fiber look-a-like for a fraction of the cost.I did this on the handmade console in my 72 RR clone and it looked great.

The decal idea is good, but personally I wouldn't choose it. It'll look just as good at first but the peeling after years of use will be bad. But then again, it's a decal so you can re-apply, I just would rather choose something more permanent.

I went to fibreglast.com and purchased a small amount of carbon fiber material. They have a very good website, chock full of useful information about composite fabrication and mold making. I'm thinking of some projects to do in Aaron's car or for just the fun of it. Fiberglass work has always intrigued me, so I'm hoping this might lead into a hobby.

Thanks for all the input,
Jerry

I was tired of the woodgrain painted aluminum in my truck, so now that I'm doing a frame-off rebuild, I re-did the dash with cherry veneer. I originally found a Carpathian elm burl veneer that looked perfect for my use...until I found out the price. Would you believe $119 for a 24" square piece of veneer??!!!

I've seen a place on the internet that sells bulk carbon fiber material, but I can't recall where and couldn't find it in my bookmarks.

Bulk is what I bought. This "Fibre Glast" website has a close-out sale to get rid of the small pieces off the tail end of larger bolts of material. The piece I got was 18" x 72" and only cost $19.50. They even had pieces as small as 4.5" x 72". They also sell Kevlar in bulk. Need to make a bullet proof vest?

I wish I had known, at the time I ordered the material, about the differences in the resins used for composite fabrication. I could have saved on shipping cost. I figured I would just go down to my local paint store and get a little fiberglass resin. Not so.

Oh, well, that's how we learn,
Jerry
