So whats it going to take for me to bolt my '62 225 up to a later(non type writer)tranny? I thought I remember reading some place that the crank flanges are different, if so is this a mayjor problem. And are the tranny mounts in different locations?

This is a problem because the hub on the later trans torque converter is larger then the mating hole in the 60-67 SL6 crankshaft.
Here are your options:

Buy a special "problem solver" torque converter. It will have a small front hub with the larger input shaft spline size.

Swap the input shaft out of a 60-67 trans and into the later trans.

Bore-out the back of your crank to the larger hub size. (or swap the crankshaft to the 68-76 type with the larger hole.

Note that all the mounting hole patterns and mounting points are the same but the driveshaft, shift linkage and speedometer drive is different.

oh boy,, I did this with my spare 64 Polara engine, best of luck to you. Yes it can be done but I learned some hard lessons. We ended up trying to turn the locating dowel on the torque converter down, BIG MISTAKE! The dowel is hollow and acts as a bearing support for the impeller inside. $80 later, we had the TC back repaired, for some reason our rebuilder couldnt supply a TC in the spec we wanted, due to the dimensions of the input shaft. Our options were as the Doc stated to graft input shaft from an earlier trans, replace the trans, crank, or turn out the inside of the crank bore. We chose the last option. It worked.

I also had to replace the crank pulley because the genny-equipped 64 motor used a smaller pulley than the Alt-equipped later motor. The oilpans also didnt interchange. Be sure and check these before you swap.

Good thing you asked!

It's really that involved? Damn, I'm about ready to pull the \6 and drop in a 318/904. This slant stuff is dexpensive, my tranny is failin fast and I could buy a rebuilt SBM 904 for less than having my early type writer rebuilt! I wish they were a lil' more inerchangabe.

I don't know why, it would cost more to rebuild your push button trans, then a later 904. The parts cost the same. and the labor should be the same.

Well, not really if you circumvent the learning curve I had to go through. Just change your front pulley, double check your oilpan sump to make sure it clears your center link lock to lock, and remove your crank to ream out the hole. Bring your TC with you so it can be test fit. I could probably have done the whole thing in a day if I had known what lay ahead. Keep your chin up!

It was not too bad. As long as you have that little ring adapter, things hook up easy and the swap is not to involved. It was my first time. I have a 62 Lancer and I replaced my 170 w/ a 225 that was ten years newer.
good luck!

Bolting a 68 and later engine to a 60-67 904 is pretty easy.
Connecting a 68 and later 904 tranny (big hub) to the 60-67 SL6 crank (small hub) is not possible unless you "get tricky".

How much does a rebuild kit cost? With all the clutches and seals, and whatever else usually comes in them.

A master overhaual kit for the cable shifted 904 is about $50. In cludes everything but the bands, these are additional, and seperate. If you have trouble finding a kit for the 1965 and older trans, give these people a call.

I have dealt with them for over 20 years, They are not the cheapest, but they don't rip you off, and they have the correct parts, and good quality.

Oh the reason the SB 904 would be cheaper is cause it's already built and I would pay for the parts that went into it and none of the labor. The problem is that it's our only car and can't be down for more than a weekend, that and I'm completely inept at building automatic trannys. $50 isn't to bad I may check out that place Charrlie_s. Thanks guys.
