And it cleaned the dingiest greaseball in 15 min? And if you left it in for 20 min. it started eating the zinc? I freshened up the BBS yesterday. I took the carb apart and put the pieces in the cleaner and went to eat lunch. Came out and pulled them out and they didn't look much different than when I put them in. Then I remembered this stuff is carb cleaner in name only. Took the parts to the solvent tank and washed all the grease off. Put them back in the "cleaner" and wait and wait and wait some more. Finally got tired of waiting and took the parts out and sprayed them down with spray cleaner. The spray cleaner works better than the dip. Anyway, since I live in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, I was wondering if you can still buy real carb cleaner in the good old USA? Next time I take a trip back to the US I will get some if they do. What do you fellows use? |

i have found that plain simple green is a safe,economical general purpose cleaner.it has not failed to impress time and again.. |

I know! Carb cleaner has taken a real nosedive in the last twelve years or so. I think it's because the chlorinated solvents that used to be in them are banned due to environmental concerns. I think ZepPresto still does an OK job though, but Ive only seen it available in five gallon steel drums. I don't know what else to tell you, Ive always just made do with brake cleaner and fuel injector cleaner. |

Berrymans B-12 Chemtool Carburetor and Choke Cleaner is the best spray I've found in recent times. I get it at Walmart. It has a lot more potent stuff in it than the others. The expensive dip pail from NAPA or Gunk brand still works great too. It's a cold parts cleaner. |

Napa brand Macs carb cleaner is naaaasty stuff. Works like a charm. I would suggest not leaving rubber in there for more then 5 min or it swells quite nicely..... 1 gallon size is roughly $20 (excellent for dipping carbs) and 5 gallon is $100. Well worth it... You put your hand within a few inches from the top of the liquid and you can feel the heat it generates. 15-30 min in that stuff and your good to go. |

i second the napa--macs carb clearner. plus, i use strainers to recycle it back in the container when im done. had the same container of it for 3 years now. will take certian paints off too if your not careful. good stuff. --chad |

Thanks, I will try the NAPA - Macs next time. I will have to go further now though. I went to pick up a intake/exhaust gasket a couple weeks ago and they were gone! The store had been bought out by the Carquest store where you stand around and wait while the three people behind the counter wander around and answer the phone and generally ignore you. It is now over 20 miles to my closest NAPA. There is a better environment friendly oil cleaner upper than Simple Green. It is called Oil Eater and I got it at Costco. The owner of the machine shop up the street uses it and told me about it. |

Ok guys i'm going to let you in on a little secrect i use... Walmart .. Supertech brand carb cleaner in the black cans. It is the spray stuff but i use it for cleaning parts, Killing bees, stripping paint, and the best part... $.98 a can!! Frank |

I've just checked availability of all the above brands at the local parts stores... None of them are available in Canada, save for Simple Green! I suppose the rumours I heard about chlorinated solvents are true up here. Just be thankful you guys have a choice between US-only and "export" type formulations...

i know it sounds strange at first.i just redid a bbd.disasembled it in a bucket with almost pure simple green.knocked off the worst after it sat for a while with a toothbrush.i was impressed.carb looks and runs like new.i suppose there was a good reason thats what we cleaned our rifles with in the army... |

I think many of those carb cleaning solvents in the dip can are supposed to be 'sealed' by having a water layer above them. If you allow the water to evaporate there will be no barrier to the volatile solvents from evaporating too. |
