Could a 170 be made to turn low 17 to high 16 second times(1/4 mile) and still be streetable(naturally aspirated) in a 3100 pound car with 3.55 gears and a 4 spd.If this is realistic ,what would be your suggestions.
Thanks in advance

I believe Charlie Schmidt has done this on the motor with an auto and 3.91 gears, so I'd say, yes. He's got all those 170 tricks for ya.

A 170 is going to need some cam and some low gearing so it can spin some RPMs.
Set-up the combo to see 7000 RPM and you will have a fun little "screamer" on your hands.

The main thing I would reccommend, to anyone building a non-stock 170, is to put valve notches in the pistons. I cut my head .100, and the most cam I could use, was the old Crane s-264. Adv dur 264* at .050 222*, lift .434. With the shim head gasket, when I pulled the head, I had valve marks on all the pistons. A 170, with a stick, and 3.55 gears, shouln't require a lot. I had the above cam, zero deck, .100 off the head, a modified stock 1bbl manifold, with a Holly 500 2bbl carb, Msd 6a ign. Clifford headers. Trans was a manual shift 904 with a 3500 converter, 3.91 SG 7 1/4 rear. Ran a 22 inch tall tire on the track. car weight was about 2750 with me in it. Would run mid 16's. I would say notch the pistons, a little more cam, offie manifold, with a small 4bbl. With a short tire at the track, I think you could turn low 16's. But with a stick I don't think you should try the 7 1/4 rear.
PS: my head was totally stock. If you do some pocket porting and port matching, it sould make a big difference. Don't need big valves, and don't need to get carried away, with the porting.

Thanks everyone.I had planned on running the H-P manifold,Dutra duals, and Comp Cams 264s with .440 lift but use a composite gasket with about .090 off the head and the 4spd od with the low first gear.
