Post subject:  distributer drive gear failed (twice)

The lower gear has been chewed up twice in two years?

Any quesses?

May-be the oil pump drive gear is wearing or the cam gear is chipped or rough. Time to get a bright light and take a close look down the hole.

You might also check the slop in the distributor shaft. If there's too much play, that might shred it. Also, check for rubbing or obstruction in the mech advance mechanism (below pickup plate). Anything causing drag might create heat at the gear.

I've had the gears snap in 2 before. It was caused by the bushings/bearings in the distributor going bad and making it hard to turn. It should turn freely without any slop/wiggle in the shaft. How old is your distributor and how many miles does it have on it. They do wear out you know.

It is a Good Thing to put some oil into the shaft of the distributer. Under the rotor, there should be a piece of round felt, just above the snap ring holding the govener in place. Thats where the oil goes. It seeps down the shaft, lubing the bushings. Also, Napa sells an iron (or is it steel?) gear for a slant distributer.

Also Old Distrib have little cup with a flap on it on the oil filter side that you are ment to oil with lite Machine Oil. This is suppose to be done every oil change, which make sense its near impossiable to do with the oil filter in place. I just use "3 in 1" oil on these.

That is called an oil cup. These were used before grease nipples were invented. It can be filled quite easily with an old fashioned oil can with a long narrow tip on it. You can find them at antique stores anywhere.

Something else to look for is up and down movement in the distributor shaft. Most every Slant distributor I've seen has a washer between the nylon gear and the distributor body. If that's missing or there is too much clearance the center of teeth on the gear can ride up above the centerline of the gear drive gear on the cam. If this happens then the teeth are not fully engaged and breakage becomes more likely.

Thanks for the info. I do not think it has a washer and will check for play.
