Post subject:  Anyone got a rear seal P/N????

i'm working with another boardmember over the next couple of weekends and we are having a major problem getting a replacement rear seal (tailshaft seal) for his A-230 transmission, I couldn't find a date code or stamp on it, and the seal we took out only has the numbers '3300' in the rubber. all the parts houses all tell me it's the same as the A-904's or the A-833's and they are blatantly wrong, the seal is smaller than anything they've shown me... A search for a rear seal for an A-903 or A-745 was fruitless....

anyone have a good Timken, Chicago Rawhide, or National part number I could walk in and say "Gimme this one"?

Thanks!!!! Much appreciated...

I don't have a good catalog for the seals but I do know that the manual transmissions came with 2 different output shaft spline sizes, one is "big" (like most 833s) the other is "small" (like the 904)

I think the 230 uses the small spline but the seal has the large outer "shell" like the 833. Fact is that I have seen some 833s that also have this combo. (small spline, large tailshaft opening)

I would call Passion Performance and ask them, have the spline count and the seal's "shell size" handy and I bet they can hook you up with the right seal.

Post subject:  Thanks....

That's the weird part about it, that the seal they try to give me is 'large', but necked down for the 'small' yoke....the A-230 uses the small yoke, but has a small tailshaft seal size.....

Thanks again Doc, you d'man....

Post subject:  You know it's bad when....

i've been to quite a few parts houses this week, and everyone of them has the wrong seal listed for the tranny. I even tried the old 'fool them into thinking it's something else' and tryed to order the seal for an A-745 speed out of a 1967 Dart with 23 or 26 spline yokes....nope the same seal should be correct for the A-903, A-230, and A-833.... Leads me to believe some Ford guy must be writing the cross reference material for Timken and National.... :?

Can't you just give them the dimensions and have them figure out the number from there? It may not cross reference in cyberland, but maybe some one has some old parts books that they'll let you pore over. Maybe it's just too much work for them to do, and you'll have to do it yourself.

Post subject:  Only one....

There are two 'old time' shops in Salem, Davis Auto Parts (the only ones that still carry Slant six parts on the shelf, and they cross reference only by application, the other one only deals with Automatic trannies....

If tomorrow doesn't turn out so good I'll be checking out a bearing house and /or using a dremel on the seal pocket to make the more 'common' seal work....

Everybody else in town only can access the computer and the company catalog....and the clerks are under the age of 23...('Got a 5.0?')

Here's what the National catalog lists;
2506 fits A230 26 spline, short extension
7300s fits A230 30 spline, long extension; A745 30 spline
8935s fits A250 30 spline, short extension; A745 26 spline
8160s fits A903; A745 23 spline; T85
These are all the pass car 3-spd listings they have. Hope there's one that works for you.

Post subject:  Jeez...

2506 fits A230 26 spline, short extension = wasn't the right O.D. was same size as 8160S

7300s fits A230 30 spline, long extension; A745 30 spline Tryed one of these yesterday, was same OD as 8160

8935s fits A250 30 spline, short extension; A745 26 spline > I have one of these on order to see if it'll do it....

8160s fits A903; A745 23 spline; T85 > Still too big to fit the tail shaft by 1/8" OD...

I'm off to the bearing house today to see if I can find a replacement for the 'mystery seal'....

thanks for the help,

Could you post the measurements of your seal? I work at a transmission shop and I might be able to help your search. For example, I list an early 904 seal (ball and trunion style) at 1.692 od, but I don't have a Nat number for it.

Post subject:  Wow....

Looks like Timken 8935 is a 'winner'... I also have a Chicago Rawhide 14939 (w/o 'boot') that also looks like it'll fit also....

weird...

thanks for the assistance, we might have to start a 'database' for manual tranny seals since there are 'some' variations...

DI, if I interpreted your last message right, the 8935s has the boot? I'm looking for a seal with boot for my 1971 904. Was surprised to see the 904 have the same seal as a manual.

One local store gave me a Timken 331228 which fits but has no boot and is starting to leak after only a day. Could be to a botched install of mine, I don't think so, but either way I'd like to replace it with one with a boot.

8935s crosses to 15535 in napa and chicago rawhide, fyi.

We tryed the Napa 15535 and the boot and seal in question was to big (it actually was a nice match for the A-833 boot I took along to make sure the catalog cross reference wasn't goofed up...). I ended up having to get mine from the local Bearing place. Sadly, I hear from a report not too long back that the boot is leaking past the boot at the yoke, so that didn't last long or the yoke is 'worn'.... jeeez...

Hmm, theres no chance you can testfit that 15535 against a 69-72 904, is there? The pre 69 used a smaller and post 73 used a bigger seal I believe I read somewhere.

Visit www.napaonline.com On the left side of the page, you can search non-napa part numbers. Sometimes chrysler part numbers (such as 2400163 for the rear seal for a 71 904) cross reference directly to a napa # (which was 15535 in previous case).

Thought I'd note too, that the seal I pulled off my 904 that the tranny shop installed had 3300 marked on the rubber.

Post subject:  Truck Yoke

I had a problem finding a correct seal as well. We have a 4-speed OD in my sons Dart and when they looked up the seal, all the car numbers they had were wrong. I'm not 100% sure but I think what we found was one listed for a 1978 pick-up truck that worked.

To add to the confusion: 1971 chrysler parts catalogue shows A903 has same part # seal as A904 (2400163) and A230 has same part # as a 727 (2400300).
