Post subject:  What is the best carb for a '65 Valiant 225 Auto?

I have two '65 Valiants that I am fixing up, both with the 225 Slant Six and Automatic transmission. One has a Holley 1920 carb and one has a Carter carb on it. I also have a few spare Holley 1920's from the '70's (4216 series, I think), that have extra (vacuum?) ports on them that my old Holley doesn't. What is the best carb to put on this car? For now I would like to retain the single barrel intake and am looking for a the best carb to rebuild/seek. Is a newer 1620 better than one of the older series? How does Carter rank compared to Holley?
Thanks, Paul

I seem to prefer the carter .But having owned probably 20 different slant6 cars,I think the most important thing is that it operates correctly. To me if the choke works good and the accellerator pump is good,I'm usually happy. Have had good luck with rebuilt carbs from any parts store, just bolted on and went. For ease of installation,I'd go w the one your car came with.

The Carter BBS is pretty forgiving, you can usually get on of those to work just by doing a rebuild.

Holley carbs work a little better, when they work. The Holley has a sealed metering block which can not be easily cleaned / repaired.
A good working Holley will give you slightly better performance and MPG.
You may have to rebuild a few Holleys before you find one that works well.

I think it depends on what you want.
I found the Carter BBS to be the easiest carb with the best mileage.
That being said I now have a Super 6 BBD > It is a little more finicky than the BBS. Performance is up, mileage went down slightly.
The Holleys look so easy but need more messing with.
