Post subject:  9" drums rust out?

Has anyone ever seen a 9" brake drum rust out at the outer dust lip besides myself? I was checking out the Valiant yesterday and was surprised to find this strange situation. Should I be worried or just use the drum as-is (w/rust out)?

Define rust-out

remember, up here if a car is rusted out it means you can't lock your dog in it. I see drums peeling rust all the time; as long as the flange is sound and the metal isnt dangerously thin at the shoe contact surface, it is useable. The outer lip of the drum where the backing plate sits is not a critical surface. It just means more sand and water will get into your brakes and you should avoid puddles, that's all.

Yeah, it's the outside flange that fits into the backing plate. It looks as if it will be okay but will indeed let more "FOD" into the brake internals, not very much though. I think i'll limp it along till I can find an 8 1/4 to replace the 7 1/4. Thanks,
