Post subject:  Bellhousings - stupid question?

Hey, im new to this board. To be completely honest, i dont have a slant 6, but i do have a question about their bellhousings.
I figured why not go to the experts?
again, this may be a dumb question, but :
do the small block mopar v8's and slant 6's share the same bellhousing.
i kind of think they dont because of where the starter motor is mounted for one thing.
theres one in the local junkyard between a slant 6 and an aluminum case 833.
if no one knows, could you direct me to a good resource on the web or a book in which i could find the info im looking for?
any help would be appreciated.
thanks in advance
jon

Nope, different bolt pattern. Although, there was an adapter plate used in some truck applications that mated a small block tranny to the /6 blocks.

You make it sound like you want to throw that aluminum 833 behind a V-8, in favor of something different. Is that what you're trying to get answered?

If so, get yourself a late, (74-80), V-8 manual trans bell housing, and mount that aluminum trans to it. You might have to play around with clutch setups a bit, but it should be a bolt-in swap.

i didnt think the bellhousing would work, but thanks for clearing up my curiousity. im swapping a flathead six out of my 50 plymouth business coupe with a 318. getting parts as i go.
thanks a lot for the replies!

by the way, the trans and engine are in a beige ram truck at the pick a part junk yard in sunland if anyone is interested. i got one out of there earlier this winter for $140. pretty good deal if you ask me!

slant 6 uses slant 6 bellhousing, small block uses small block bellhousing, big block use big block bellhousing, Period ! no interchange between anything. all three have unique bolt patterns. Late model O/D 4 speeds are identified by the shift arms pointing downward, (straight 4 speeds have shift arms pointing upwards) they also use a large o.d. retainer & must be matched to the bellhousing / engine used. late model 6 bellhousings are drilled for use of both 6 & 8 trannys, pilot retainers or pilot retainer adapters must be used according to the tranny / bellhousing being used.

I'm putting a small block scattershield on the back of my Slant. Bolts right on with the help of an adapter plate.
