ok i've been thinking about shaving my head and am wondering how much i can remove before i need to change from 87 octane with gas prices jumping around like they are i don't want to spend any more for my gas

I took 0.100" off of my head w/ a felpro head gasket and I cant run less than 92 octane at 3* before top dead center

It is better to run a lower compression engine with more spark advance rather then have to keep the timing retarded on a higher comp. engine.
If you don't want to pay for Hi-test fuel, just do a skim-cut on the head.

Valiants for export had lowered compression ratio, around 8,5:1.

Mine is US spec, but have had no trouble running it on 95, (lowest octane here) altough I rather go for 98.

Gas prices? we pay close to US$5/gallon...

i live in canada and gas prices are around 80 cents a liter so i'm looking at around five bucks a gallon for 87 octane which is why i was asking

Are you sure those octane numbers are right? Is that in RON?

I think 91 RON is 87 regular octane

My other engine i took out was basicly stock exept i milled the head 125 thousand. It did not like 87 but eat up 92 octane. I tried 106 racing foel in it and it slowed the car down. Thanks Ron Parker

We have a different octane ratio measure overseas, think our 95 is pretty close to regular 87.

We did run 115 octane in an old Volvo 140 once, and that did some difference... after fiddling with ignition settings of course. It did eventually kill it too, probably for the best, one Volvo less on the roads!

A basic clean-up cut will take about .010 so go for it.
Surfacing the head gives you a dead flat and freshly machined surface to seal the head gasket, well worth doing in my mind.

Lucky! Try $2.11 here for 87 octane .... silly California. The price is changing by the hour... you go out at the beginning of the day and its liable to go up a nickel by the time you come back home at night.
