I am trying to remove the steering column from my 72 duster as I am removing the k-member. I cannot disconnect the column from the steering box, HELP.

It is a manual steering box, automatic column shift. Tried to push the pin out at the coupler neer the box, but no luck, what am I doing wrong?

I took one out today on a rusty car. I soaked the pin on both sides a few times. Since I didn't have a big pin punch, I took an old 5/16" push rod, ground the end flat, then used a 3lb hand sledge to knock it out. It's better to take the pin out than disassemble the pot coupler.

Like Cecil said, soak a while with penetrating oil. The pin is split lengthwise and will come out with a little "persuasion". Use a pin punch, similar diameter bolt, or anything else you have that covers the entire end of the pin, but won't get stuck in the hole itself.

You can leave the column/box in the car and still pull the kframe out. Just make sure you support the box with something once the kframe is out because all that weight on the column may tweak something.
