Post subject:  manual steering box repair

hello sl6 sages-back in 89 when i bought my76 feather duster it had much play in the steering. i loosened the hold nut on top of the box witht he little screw head in it and adjusted down the screw. i had to adjust the screw down until it was flush with the nut in order to take the play out of the unit. then i tightened downthe nut. i keep heavy oil in the box and the steering has been good and tight for a long time but that was 15 years ago. a little bit of play is creeping back into the steering and i knowthe little screw head shouldnt be adjusted down any further for safety. assuming the box will soon have to be repaired or replaced are parts for these things still available. boneyard boxes would probably be just as worn if they are available even. doesnt the little screw draw worn worm gears closer together? i would appreciate your kind thoughts on the matter. thanks paladin

You can get rebuilt boxes from Steer&Gear in OH, or www.firmfeel.com. Also good to check Ebay (search "Mopar steering box" for example). I bought a used low mileage box out of a 340 Duster for about $60 and it is tight. There's also a guy who puts up rebuilt units for about $170 from time to time.
