Post subject: | Weight of a Slant 6 Engine |
bigblockdart.com has a new tech section. There is a table they have listing stock engine weights. They claim the stock SL 6 weight is 525 lbs. They also say the 273-340's were 525 lbs. Is it really true that the Slant 6 and the 340 weigh the same? This would surprise me, as of course I thought the SL6 weighed less. |

In a forum from Argentina http://www.dodge-tech.com.ar/soop/forum ... D=318&PN=1 I found this info on engine weights: From one source: Engine CID Weight ------------------------------- Mopar 6 198/225 475 lb 215 kq Mopar V8 273/318 550 lb 249 kq 340/360 Mopar V8 383/400 670 lb 304 kq 440 MoparHemi 426 690 lb 313 kq From a second source: Mopar Slant Six 475 lb 215 kg Mopar 273-340 "A" V8 525 lb 238 kg Mopar 360 "A" 550 lb 249 kg Mopar 361-383-400 V8 620 lb 281 kg Mopar 413-426W-440 V8 670 lb 304 kg Mopar Street Hemi 765 lb 347 kg The weight of the \6 seems consistent with Tom Drake's heaviest engine weighing in at 477 lbs and is about 50 lbs lighter than the small block V8s. Hey! did you notice this is a highly international thread? |

The slant six crank weighs about 70 pounds, the head, almost 75 pounds, the block 160 pounds. That is 305 pounds. Add in the pistons and rods, water pump, valve cover and oil pan and 475 seems to be too high, but that's what people are saying. |

Think maybe that's including both manifolds, carb, and air cleaner? Jerry |

plus camshaft, timing chain set, oil pump, starter Still it doesn't seem like the weight would be 305 + 160 = 475 but 475 probably is true. Could save some weight with an alloy manifold and mini starter. |

How about the aluminum block slant six of the early '60s? Were they considerably lighter? |
