| Post subject: | Air Cleaner |
im thinking about putting an open element air filter on my car. what will i do about the breather that has the hose attached to the side of the air cleaner? im also thinking about running a hose off my intake snorkel to form a sort of cold air intake. which one would give me more of a boost? i figure i wont be able to tell the difference but itll be there, so any body have an opinion? |

If you go with an open element air cleaner, just get a push in breather cap without the nipple that will fit the grommet on the valve cover. Late '70's cars with slants will have the closed air cleaners with a hose that goes to the inner fender for cool air. |

anyone know where i can get a base plate for an open element that will fit the carter bbd 2 bbl. i saw a pic on here sometime and someone had an open element and the top had a super six sticker on it. looked pretty cool so i thought id do someting like that unless i might get a little better performance with the "cold air intake" idea. |

you may be talking about mine ![]() It is actually a super six aircleaner that I cut down with a dremmel and used brake fluid to remove the paint and not the sticker. |

i read on slantsix.com of a guy who dynoed his car with the stock air cleaner and then put an open element on and gained 5 horses and 17 ft/lbs of torque. so what do you guys think, cold/ram air type setup or open element air cleaner for a little more power? would the increased flow of an open element out weigh the gains of a cooler air charge? |

For reference: ![]() Air cleaner is "super six" type with 4bbl "bell" grafted into base and additional snorkel added. Please note that I still run the thermostatically controlled carb heat (from a "stove" fashioned on the headers) and vacuum controlled air doors on both snorkels to close out cold air until warm-up... Neat idea... and simple. I'm filing this one away for future reference. It is actually a super six aircleaner that I cut down with a dremmel and used brake fluid to remove the paint and not the sticker. D/W |

Mr Gasket makes a 10" diameter 2bbl chrome air cleaner. They have it listed an PN 9798. The cut-down super six air cleaner would be cheaper and would probably work better as the OEM air filter seems to be a lot bigger. |

Try flipping the air cleaner lid upside down. I did this on my car and noticed quite a change even with the stock 1-barrel. You can also get a punch out and cut several round holes in the side of the air cleaner. Will look really cool too. |

You can get a plastic adapter for the Mr. Gasket air cleaner at Pep Boys (and probably other places, too). I was able to get a skinny K&N airfilter that looks pretty cool, too. The plastic adapter comes with a nipple that you can drill out and attach an oil breather tube to, but I prefer that breather w/o the hose. Best of luck, Joe |

Do they make an adapter to mate a 1-barrel to 5 1/8 neck air cleaner. I think a 10 inch open element air cleaner would look really cool on my car. Hey 66 Dart, I love your air cleaner setup, how does it sound? Does it moan when you get down on it. I have a 14 inch open element on my truck and it makes a really loud howling sound at full throttle. Intimidates the heck out of a guy at a red light. |
