What does an engine that is detonating sound like? Fortunately I have never had this problem with anything I drive but I want to know so that I might be able to help somebody fix their car someday. |

If you hear a rattling when you accelerate slowly without shifting gears, that's pinging or pre-ignition, which can lead to detonation. Sometimes you can't hear detonation, but it's doing a number on your pistons whether you can hear it or not. |

How do you know if it is happening if can't hear it? Is their any other signs to look for? |

White or silvery particules on the spark plugs, usually means detonation. |
