I have decided to swap a 318 into my Uncle's 82 D-150 which currently has a 225. A good friend of mine wanted to get rid of this motor because he got tired of it sitting in his yard. I told him I would take it since it only needs a basic overhaul and its free. Here is what I got. It came out of a 1980 Diplomat and it has a set of 360 heads and a 4-barrel intake. No water appears to have gotten into the motor and it was full of oil until it turned over in the back of my truck. I think I will do a close to stock rebuild because the last engine I overhauled was several years ago and that was 3 horse Briggs & Stratton. I found a set of pistons with 9.5 compression ratio. Is this too high a compression, and will I have any detonation issues? Also, will I have to run premium grade fuel through it?
I think I will use one of the Comp Cams truck power camshafts in it, because I would like to have lots of low-end torque since this truck is going to be doing a lot of towing. Any advice would be much appreciated. :D

Dennis,

do not be so disapproving! I quess he is greedy for his uncles slant.

Maybe the next question is from where to get the mounts to F-150/slant conversion.

I'm not disapproving - I love the LA and the big block, for that matter, I have several of "everything" myself... Just seemed like the wrong forum, and I was just teasing old Jeb, anyway... :D

You will be doing good to have 8.0:1 compression with the 360 heads as they are 8-9 ccs bigger than the 318s so 87 should be fine and about 34-35 degrees of timing total, if it is the heart shaped chambers (not knowing) you can only run 30 degrees of timing total due to combustion chamber shape and the efficiency.

"it was full of oil until it turned over in the back of my truck."
Thanks for the chuckle! Been there, done that(more than once, I'am ashamed to admit). It is reassuring to know I am not the only bonehead out there.

At least the oil will stop the rust problem that I am having in the bed. Even if everything slides around now when I take a curve or hit the gas.
