I have read alot on this site about grinding away unwanted material but I'm still not sure where this material is. Is there anyway we could get a picture up here with the "bad" area colored in? I have seen Doug's article, but I'm still unclear. I will take a photo, and snail mail it to someone if they will help me out. :?
I am bringing my head in for a 3 angle job. The head is not original (1973) I have a new cam (Comp 252),pushrods and springs. I want to know:
-should I give the machinist the cam specs
-should I polish it myself or have him do it
-are new valves a good idea (worth the money)
-anything else I should do while the head and cam is out
I have a new timing chain also.
Thanks for your help !!! :P

What you really need to do is remove the excess metal that overhangs into the port just above the valve seats. The idea is to create a smooth transition from the seat to the port. This is easy to do with the right tools. Your machinest should be able to do this easily.

when you go to the shop take your intake/exaust manifold gasket. have them gasket match your ports. or you can do this your self. Ask for the ford 300 valves(if you do this you might need to over bore .060)ask around about that though my block was already done so I am not too sure about that. with large valves all you pay for is the large valve guide and valves the rest you would be charged for any way. so you will be paying about 120 to 130 extra. I have a set of valves I will sell you they were in my head but then I changed my mind and went with the ford valves. I know the intake is 1.44 and I think the exaust is 1.38 I will measure and recheck I want 115 for them shipping included. Email me at dnfd737@yahoo.com for details. With my valves you wont need new larger guides. as far as polishing if you port your own head you might as well polish it also but only polish the exaust side. the intake side should remain textured to help keep the fuel in suspention.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not tgoing to go to larger valves right now. I guess I want to know how to tell if the valves are bad. But now that I think about it, the guy at the shop will tell me, won't he

Well I am finally clear on what to do with the head. I saw a link to Dutch dart's drawing and the cross section of a head and I saw the light. Took a while but it was worth it. I thank everyone for the help. 8)
