My '83 hydraulic lifter moter has a leaking head gasket (bubbles in coolant, missing badly), but not yet using water, no water in oil. I have two good heads to use for a swap. newly rebuilt '64 head '78 cast crank motor Would either of these heads accept the hydraulic valve gear(including cam/lifters)? Or would I have to also swap to the solid lifter camshaft? Any other issues to consider? Valve cover etc. |

It doesn't sound like either of those heads would work unless you change to a solid camshaft & lifters. I prefer solid lifters myself. Hydraulics to float at about 4500-5000 RPM. |

I believe either head will work with the hydraulic stuff installed. With the 1978 head you will not be able to remove/change lifters with the head installed. I think the main difference between the solid lifter head and the hydraulic lifter head is that it was modified to allow removal of the lifters without removing the head. IN 1978 Chrysler installed hydraulic cam, lifters, and valve train in 20,000 high end Volaré/Aspen cars with Air Conditioning to test the durability of this then new setup. The hydraulic valve train entered production in 1981. |
