| Post subject: | Voltage regulator: points to solid state upgrade Valiant |
I am interested in upgrading my 12 volt regulator (ciol/points type) to a solid state unit. I understand there is one available that looks like the original regulator. Where can I find this? Is this the best way to go? Is there a generic regulator that is cheaper/better? Thanks. |

This solid-state retrofit is a great regulator if you want to keep your original alt, wiring, etc. The ones I have bought are Borg-Warner, I'm sorry, I don't have the part #... Check with your local real parts store (if you have one) that can get B/W stuff... May be others available, too. Maybe try NAPA... D/W |

The JC Whitney pn for the regulator I bought is in this previous discussion. It was fairly close to stock appearance and survived my son's various radios amps and boomers (read ear drum breakers). http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... ator#27231 |

Turns out the last one (transistorized retrofit) I got for my '69 Newport was a "Standard"... I still have the box: Part No: VR101T There are some crosses on the box - not sure if they are for the transistorized unit or not: MM (Motor Mite): CH524 BW: R280 NIE: AL169 Wells: VR706 You should be able to obtain one without difficulty. Years ago (more than 10), I bought a new regulator for my '61 Belvedere (Chrysler alternator); I believe it was a Std. Ign. unit...looked exactly like my old points-type reg. Last year, I bought a new Std. Ign. regulator for my '64 Valiant; I'm ashamed to put it on my firewall: it is this hideous blocky plastic thing... I think Filko also made solid-state look-alike regs... Also check out KEM.... |

Can anyone confirm that a VR706 is electronic guts with the old style case? |

Yes! The mopar performance regulator died recently in my Barracuda and I picked up a Wells VR706 to replace it. There was even a little sheet in the box explaining that the difference in appreance was because it was solid state. This regulator is not as thick as a mechanical one and did not have a painted case. If you are looking for originality this regulator is close but is also obvious that it's not original. The case is only 1/2" thick verse the 1"+ of a mechanical one. |

The parts database shows Ampco and Wells, both VR706. The last one I bought was the Wells with a chrome case. |
