Got a 1967 7 1/4 rear end with 9" drums, not the flared ones, and 2" shoes. The shoes are held to the backing plate with a double spring (one inside the other) thingy. How do I release/remove this retainer? I have not seen this type before and am trying not to break more than I fix ![]() |

go to a REPUTABLE parts store and ask them about a special tool made just for removing these brake shoe holddown springs for your 67. I have one,and it works GREAT !! The handle is the shape of a screwdriver... |

I looked at them a bit more yesterday. The anchor that the spring thing hooks into is removable out the back of the backing plate and the springs (retainer) appear to have a taper to them. Once unhooked they should pull out of the brake shoe. Thanks. |

I used to use a #1 Phillips; fits right inside the spring, allowing you to unhook it with ease and then discard it and upgrade to the nail style hold down hardware that doesn't stretch and wear your shoes funny. |
