Post subject:  '66-down A-body dual-exhaust trans crossmember?

Seems to me a few years back one of the larger-volume vendors (Layson...?) was marketing a special trans crossmember that would accommodate dual exhaust headpipes. Anyone know/remember who it was?

Laysons at www.laysons.com
Theirs is a modified original, and there is a core charge. It doesn't look very hard to fabricate ...

Thanks, SV. I have no fab facilities (and very low skill level) and would rather give my $$ to someone other than Layson, so...any suggestions for who else could do this?

I don't have the photo in front of me, but as I recall, it would only require cutting a notch in the passenger side mirroring the driver's side relief, then cutting a rectanglular patch of similar materiel, curving it to fit the relief, then welding in place. The cutting could be done (slowly) with a hacksaw and finished with a file, and the bending to shape with hammer and assorted pieces of pipe. I don't weld, but it really shouldn't take a lot of skill. I'd just bribe the welder at work ...

I don't remember if I've tried it, but I bet that a '67-up X-member would bolt right up to an early A-bod, and the later ones all allow for duals (not flat on pass side).

Wait a minute, even though the front subframe rails are 2 inches farther apart in the later A-bodies? Hmmmm. I guess it wouldn't matter, if the 4 mounting holes are in the same spot. Don't know, have never measured.

Still, if that were an easy swap, do you think people would be spending time modifying and welding the early pieces? Just wondering...

I just finished installing a A-833 o/d in my 60 Val and had the 76 crossmember close by and held it up to my t-bar crossmember and it had the same bolt pattern. The reason that Im using the 60 cross member is that the e-brake attaches to it and would be near impossable to attach to the 76 croosmember and Im running a single 2 1/4 exuast and havnt the need for duals. So from what I can tell all a-body crossmembers from 60 to 76 will phyisiclly interchange(slight mods and proper mounts will be required).
