To quote previous text, you can either click the "Quote" button in the post you wish to respond to, or you can manually put
...
around the text you wish to quote, like this:
Bassett hounds got long ears.
(your text goes here)

If you want to attribute the quote to whoever said it, the syntax is:
Oodles of green noodles make blue poodles eat strudels.
(your text goes here)

If you click the "quote" button, ALL of the text of the post will be in one big lump quote. It's best to edit this down to just the bit you want to respond to, so that we don't get super-long posts developing. For instance, if you were to click the quote button on a post, you'd get:
Blah blah blahbitty blah blah purple blah blah blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blahbitty blah blah blah
But you might trim this down to:
blah blah purple
(your text goes here)

You can also have multiple short quotes in a post (I do this frequently). In this case, put your attribution only on the first quote:
blah blah purple
(your text goes here)
blahbitty blah
(your next block of text here)
blah blahbitty
(your next text here).

If you quote multiple different people in one post, put an attribution in the first quote from each different source:
Bassett hounds got long ears
(your text here)
Blahbitty blah
(your text here)
Snowboarding is cool.
(your text here)
I like to drive my Valaint up to go snowboarding.
(your text here)

You can also embed quotes when necessary to show thread continuity (usually only when threads get really long and complex):

Blah purple
Dude, quit babbling about blahbitty purple and go snowboarding!
Just remember to keep your

in pairs (open and close each one) otherwise it won't work.

This post has been made with encoding disabled so you can see what has been typed. Below is the same text with encoding not disabled, so you will see the results of the above.
