Rock,

Excellent pictures! Thank you very much! Glad I asked for the pictures, it has been 8 weeks since my 2nd eye surgery (detached retina), I am only running on one eye to do the work, so it takes a bit longer.

It has been a long day grinding and polishing. I picked up a Fel-Pro gasket to compare it with the Aussie carbon fiber gasket and the Aussie is allot bigger. I didn't go quite as big as the Aussie gasket, but pretty close. In 9 months of running I am surprised how much carbon build up there is on the mismatched surfaces.

I have everything painted and ready to bolt up tomorrow morning. We actually had a day of sunshine, so all is good.

By the way the ROL gasket had de-laminated in 5 places. Three exhaust leaks that went up and two intake leaks that I couldn't see from the bottom side. No wonder the mileage started to drop.

Thanks again!

rock that is one beautiful piece of work. Congrats!

what valves did you use on that head? (brand, size, price, material)

Thanks,AT, DD and Argentina!

I gotta thank DD without whom I would not have advanced to even attempting such porting and deconstructing...and of course I agree with him insofar as he is talking about 1bbls and the "step". I realize AT was asking about manifolds at one time and heads another, and I was talking about porting the head E and I ports.

I run the Offy aluminum intake and a set of Dutra duals. I opened the head and the Dutras to the same size on the Exhaust ports...the size of the Aussie gasket.... because with big valves(1.70 adn 1.44) and 9:2 compression and the new Erson cam I wanted to increase "breathing" out all I could. A lot of us at my engine shop argued a few weekends about the wisdom of opening up the intake ports, so I compromised to keep a step in place. I opened the Offy ports about halfway between the Aussie gasket hole size and the stock size hole. The head Intake was opened to Aussie size. This leaves a step only marginally smaller than stock. In essence I kept the step ratio nearly constant but made the total crossections larger to try to increase intake flow.

And doing a little tuning yesterday seems to indicate success..I was able to adjust my 4bbl 390 cfm Holley to idle at 900 rpm with 20.5 in vacuum in "Drive" with my new 727 after changing down to a 6.5 power valve. I was not running too rich at idle as before (with a lower compression head not ported much) because I did not have to open the carb throttle screw thereby exposing the idle transfer slot and dumping gas. (THANK YOU ARGENTINA for your discussions on Holleys!)

So Ted I am glad you, too, got some time to do a little playing way out west and look forward to hearing about results, and thanks for nice comment re. pics. Thaks again to Doc for his lucid explanation re. porting, and Argentina, man, YOU are the dude who does beautiful work so I really appreciate your comment! The valves in this head are the
nitrous grade stainless 1.70 and 1.44 ones from engnbldr (who is on ebay) because I am thinking about moving to blow through turbo as I learn more and I wanted a head good enough to do that work. I think I paid about $100 all toldfor the valves because I got some extra ones at same time to use for spares and to use one of each for pocket porting "blanks" to avoid damaging seats. Oh I am gonna PM you...I got prices for your parts...finally.

Thanks to all for the best school on the web!

Thanks!

Excellent article Doctor, thanks on be half of us all.

Rock, the pictures were just-in-time. We had sunshine for two days!
Got everything put back together today, just in time for a week of rain.

I wish I had this article 9 months ago when I was doing the rebuild! :D

As it is I didn't do too bad. It runs very well considering I didn't do all the items mentioned. Now the manifolds have the step for the intake charge coming in and a step, going bigger on the way out.

The Aussie carbon fiber gasket is really nice, lots of crush and no more intake and exhaust leaks.

I can't believe it is the same engine. Runs smooth, then roars.

I would like to find a aluminum one barrel manifold your were suggesting and change over to an electric fan to get the engine to run a little hotter early on during the warm up cycle and at freeway cruise. It does get much better mileage running a little hotter. About 2 more miles to the gallon.

Thanks again.
