I am still really happy with the work Gary Tayman did on my '62 Lancer's original radio in the early-mid 1990s. He converted it to FM/AM operation with an aux input (originally for a Discman, now used with an iPod), without changing the appearance of the unit at all. The conversion parts he used at that time were rather primitive compared to what he has available to install currently, but as I say, the conversion job he did back then still works just fine. You turn on the radio and it's AM, just like it always was. Flick it off and back on, and you have FM.

Other options are this place (I have no experience with them, but they appear to offer a service of adding FM dial markings to converted radios…perhaps Tayman can also do it), or for a totally different approach, this device.

One of the best and fairly easy upgrades is to replace the standard speaker in the dash with two of the best 4 inch speakers you can find. They reflect off the windshield which really improved mids and highs. You make a plate of wood or composite using the old speaker as a template and make the cutouts for the twin 4"s.

The other thing is to run a smallish good amp. I you are lucky enough that no one has cut your door panels for speakers, I say do not do it. Good door panels are rare. You might want to run a couple of box speakers to sit on the floor. If the doors and or deck are cut, a good amp will let you power the speakers.

Before you put in a stereo in the dash, try two things: 1) Run the stock AM through the amp. It will blow your mind. You can use a relay so that turning the radio on powers up the amp. 2) Plug your I pod or any music device (most phones can store a bunch of music) directly into your new amp using a simple cord from the headset output into dual RCA jacks.

That will give you all the good quality music you will want. with a completely stock look and zero temptation for someone to break something expensive on your car to get in.

If you still want a stereo, mount it in the glove box or have a shop do it. i took out the fiber board glove box liner and flipped it over to I would have the top flat to mount a slide out. I never use it I just use an I pod with an amp.

However read my new post regarding the lust for higher amperage.

I just googled "secret audio car stereo" and came up with more options than I could shake a stick at.
