At the risk of starting another flame war, I have seen red, blue, and yellow slant sixes before. What does the list know about the yellow ones? I am (slowly) restoring a red 1963 valiant convertible and although a red slant six would be correct, I was thinking yellow would look better in the red engine bay. Weren't the yellow ones just the truck or industrial engines? Also, does anyboy know who makes the proper yellow engine paint, or a close proximity?

You can paint a slant six any color ("colour" in Canaduh) you like except turd brown, which is WRONG!

Of course I can, but the IDEA is a correct looking yellow engine. I was hoping someone had some insight. Of course I could paint it the correct red (but I don't like that in a red car) or the correct-for-for-the-block blue (also don't like in a red car) but they ALSO came from the factory in yellow, and that sounds kinda cool. I have seen a slant six painted Hemi Orange and though cool looking, isn't my thing.

It is not the factory correct color, but NAPA farm & Equipment Caterpillar yellow. I like it. :)

Can I have some more pics of your engine, looks pretty cool! and more your exhaust manifold.

And to add some more ideas for this topic.

Your car is Red, right? exterior paint is Red and Engine Bay is Red, right?
You can use a Yellow like Super6 engine has or one a little dark, or meaby use two colors.

Metallic dark turquoise: Some 1960-'61 Plymouth-Dodge full size cars, North American market

Silver: 1961 (RV1 sold as "1962") Valiant, Australian market, some '60-'61 Plymouth-Dodge full size cars, some '61 Valiant/Lancer.

Red: 1962-68 all passenger cars, all markets, except as specified below, plus most 1960-61 Valiant/Lancer, North American market

Turquoise-blue: 1962 through 1966 Canada-market 170 engines, plus all slant-6s in 1969 passenger cars & trucks throughout the North American market

Blue: 1970-1982 all passenger cars & trucks, North American market

Turquoise-green: 1967-1969, w/2bbl carb, Australian market

Orange: 1967-19??, w/2bbl carb, South African market

Yellow: 1962-early 1969 truck/bus, North American market (some '61-'62 got red)

Unless the color you choose is factory correct for the car it is in, your color choice is moot. Genuine Chrysler choice or not, it's still incorrect. No judge will see it any different. Let personal preference be your guide.

Do you happen to know if the blue to black conversion might have been a mid-year 1983 deal?

The sl6 I owned was in an 83 M-body, and it was black. I'm certain it was the original engine, too, because it was an ex-highway patrol car (before someone laughs, NO it wasn't a cruiser it was an "administrative vehicle" :P ) and came with complete maintenance records, just like the ex-cruisers did. No engine change.

Either way, its unforgivable how they strangled the poor SL6 and failed to update it by 1983. I don't think its top speed was much over 75 MPH, and one time I couldn't even maintain 70 into a headwind. And to add insult to injury, we had a nearly-identical car except for being 318-powered that actually got BETTER gas mileage :cry: But, it was utterly reliable as always (so was the 318 car for that matter).

Having my car judged for correct date coded motor oil and brake shoes has never interested me. I'm just looking for general information on where the yellow engines were supposed to be and what the proper shade would be.

Im not saying youre taking on a fool's errand. I do much of the same thing myself on my car. All I am saying is that it really doesn't matter whether the yellow is correct or not, as long as it's close no one is going to split hairs with you over it. From what Dan is saying there probably werent too many that did come in yellow and you probably arent going to find it in cans off the shelf. You might be able to dig up an obscure document somewhere containing the original blend formula, but even so paint formulations have changed since then (paints contain no lead anymore and shading is thus different) and this info will be of little use. Ive been through the same hassle trying to match my VW's factory color and Glasurit is now owned by BASF, the paint line is now "22" rather than "20" and the formulas are not compatible with each other. Now paint codes can only be matched using paint chips from sales brochures (yikes).

This is supposed to be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby and I simply see a lot of frustration for you down this road. Paint it what you like and enjoy it. No one will fault you for it. :)

I don't see a Chrysler yellow there, unfortunately.

FWIW, DE 1619 "Chrysler Green" is actually the late-60s big-block turqouise.

<rooting around for a photo of a DE-1619-painted 440 I have somewhere....>

It looks "bluer" in the digital photo than real life. DE-1619 is a pretty good match to the original color, *maybe* just a hint bluer. IMO, most of the DupliColor colors are reasonable matches, and the paint seems very good quality.

It would not surprise me in the least. Or I might be off by a year.

It certainly is, especially since they engineered and developed the updates...just didn't put them into production. :-(
